I don't know much about wine, but I'm looking into getting a bottle of red. Suggestions?

Without a doubt, you want a Pinot Noir.  In CA, you can get your hands on a Robert Mondavi anywhere.  I would also recommend the many OR labels that are out.  Over the last several years OR has really made a name for itself with Pinot Noir.  If that is too bold, try a Merlot (again, Robert Mondavi).

You're in CA?! Hit the wineries! Pay a few bucks and take the tasting tour.

Lots of variety in red wine, and you could get a bottle that went bad
because of temperature or the seal and never know it would have been
your favorite.  I've found that some reds HAVE to "breathe" to be good and
some are good without.  Find somone at a store that can advise you competently

CA Cabernet is the best.
