I was surprised to find a good supply of magazines at two different Academy stores this weekend. They had several different brands. But the ones that caught my eye were labeled with the Red Jacket logo. Appears to be the same come from TV, based in Louisiana. They were on sale. So I bought 3. They appear to be mil spec 30 round magazines, and appear to be made well. The finish is a mil spec finish and is grayish anadized. The anadizing is pretty light and scratches easy. But they appear to be solid mags. I just got them this weekend. So I don't know how they will perform.
Have any of you used these mags? If so, what were your impressions? How did they perform? |

I am a hermit and very rarely go to town so much my wife knows that I am going to stop at local gun shops when in town. Two weeks ago I found a ton of P-Mags in stock at all the local shops 14.99 was the cheapest I saw. I would stay away from buying these over priced mags unless you just have a hard-on for Red Jacket branded products. Academy is great for getting an Ugly Stick or a Mickey Mouse fishing pole not gun stuff. I hear ya on that. The only problem for me is that my area doesn't have too many gun shops. In fact, at one point within a 15 mile area or so I could only find two that were worth going into. Now there is only one near my house, well the next town over anyway. But, I have an Academy pretty close, and two Walmarts pretty close. We do have a Basspro, but it's a 45 minute drive. There are several gun shops in Houston. But, for me, living down in Santa Fe they are a bit of a drive through horrid traffic. So, unless I wanna burn a bunch of gas I'm pretty limited as to where I can get gun related items. And, right now Academy is pretty much the go to place around here. As for the mags, well I do enjoy the Sons of Guns show, and I like them fella's on the show. But, that's only one reason I was drawn to the mags. They appeared to be just like the ones we used for TDCJ, which is to say mil spec mags, mostly Colt as that is what we mostly had for AR15's. And, we typically had few malfunctions on a range day. So, I figured I'd be happy with mil spec mags. The tag on the package advised they were mil spec. So, I bought them. Plus, in my area they have been scarce as hens teeth. That was the first time I'd seen any AR15/M16 mags in Academy or anywhere else for that matter since the panic. As for the pmags, well I truthfully have never used one. We only used mil spec mags in TDCJ. I was aware there mags such as the Pmags. I just never considered them. I didn't join AR15.com until after I had purchased my Windham SRC. I got the SRC at Academy as well. But, the day I got the Windham they didn't have any mags at all in stock cause I asked. One thing I did do, cause it seemed like a good idea, was order some Pmag anti tilt followers to put in the new mags. I may not need them. But, with them in I think there will be less of a chance for a malfunction. So, my mags cost me a bit more than normal. I'm learning. At least it wasn't too costly a mistake. I don't really need a bunch of mags. I'm retired now from TDCJ. So, my use of the rifle will be for target practice, hunting, plinking and home defense. I wanted the mags so when I go somewhere I can carry the mags loaded, without having to carry a bunch of boxes of ammo. Everyone seems to be real happy with their Pmags. So, I will probably get a few of them too. From the sounds of it you can't really go wrong with them from all that I'm reading. |

Two gates and 5 miles of dirt roads then 50 miles to the nearest gun shop or town to the south and 90 miles to the nearest one to the north that I know of. My kids think their clothes come from the post office, no joke. Shop around online for awhile and you will find deals on p-mags at pre panic prices in a month or so this is what I think is going to happen. Sounds like you live in some purty country Pirkle. I just came back from a hunt on a friends ranch just South of Post, TX back in April. I help him with his roundup and branding each year, and he lets me hunt out there for aoudads, hogs, and predators. His house sounds about like yours, a long way from anywhere. |

I am a new fangled ranchhand, we sold the cows, now I look after 600 or so whitetails in a breeder operation I do my round up with a Polaris and a dart gun. I get to hunt deer 5 months out of the year that I will never be able to afford to shoot but my 8 year old daughter killed the biggest deer in the family a 150". Audads, Axis, Fallow, Wildebeast, and tons of blackbucks to look at and hunt we had Zebras but they killed a lot of fawns so the died of lead poisoning. I live in an area where there is daily traffic of "criminal trespassers" I carry an AR and an FNH 45 that holds 15+1 rounds of sweet .45 acp daily I have tried a bunch of different magazines and the p-mags are by far the best ones. Sounds pretty interesting. At the risk of going way off topic, sounds like your a lot more south of where my buddies ranch is. Have the tresspassers been confrontational? Are they cutting fences, breaking into buildings thieving? If so I would sure be carefully. And be prepared, which it sounds like you are. I'm definitely going to invest in some Pmags. They sound like the mags to have. Thanks Pirkle. |

Red Jacket opened up a whole new market with these. I can't believe nobody else thought about making 30 round mags befour now. My guess is they wanted on the bandwagon with the political climate what it is. It looks like they got some generic, sterile mags and just branded them with their bottom plates. As long as they function properly I'm ok with that. |

Confrontational, cutting fences, breaking into stuff, assaulting Border Patrol, raping, beating and killing fellow trespassers are all normal. The "trespassers" have no accountability for their
actions and will get away with 99.999999% of it. They run drugs through this place and the government has cut the BP's gas budget so we get no helicopter support and very little highway and brush patrol. I would feel safer letting my kids play in Downtown Chicago than unattended out here. More and more are coming across I have caught Albanians, Chinese, Middle Eastern, and mostly South Americans. I talked to my veterinarian (Texas Border Volunteers) today and they caught a coyote with an English to Pakistani dictionary with key phrases highlighted last week. I grew up 45 miles from OK and 45 miles from NM on a farm now I live 45 miles north of the border on the opposite end of Texas its an eye opener to say the least. Like you said not trying to hijack but just want people to know if they ask. In short stick to pmags I trust my life with them and they haven't failed me yet and never will even with all the beach sand around the ranch. |

I don't see any cage codes on the side of the mags. The only markings are on the bottom. Here is a pic:
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c211/mley1/null_zps75bde258.jpg And, this is what the followers look like. Sorry for the blurry pic. Using my phone for the pics. http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c211/mley1/null_zps5632a717.jpg I ordered some of the pmag followers online, and will install them when I get them. The mags look solid. The anodizing isn't real good and shows marks real easy. But, I expected that when I bought them. They sure aren't as pretty as my black WW mag that came with the rifle. They look real similar to the surplus M16 mag I got from my bil. |

Well, crap. I shoulda known. Mine were marked 24.95, on sale for 19.99. Well, being a noob I guess these are the kind of mistakes I'll make. Hopefully they'll function well. You learn from mistakes. You cant go wrong with pmags, at about $12-14 each. I must be looking in the wrong places. Where can I find the pmags for 12-14 dollars? I've seen them for 24-27 dollars in the brick and mortar stores. Lowest I've found is about 17 online, plus shipping usually brings it up to 20 or so. Help a brotha out!!(BTW, I say I'm a noob cause I bought my first AR recently, a Windham Weaponry SRC) |

Thanks Joe! Looking at those threads now. Found several online spots with them on sale, one for 11.66 per mag. But, if I want three of them it's 14.95 shipping. So, that brings the total to 49.93. That brings the total cost of each mag to 16.64 or so. Still better than the 19.99 I paid for my Red Jackets. With taxes mine got bumped to almost 21 per mag. But, no shipping costs. Academy did have some pmags. But, they were 24.95 each. So, I figured what the heck on the Red Jackets. I like their tv show, so maybe their mags will be decent was my thinking. So much for that. But, now that I got them I think I'll do some shooting with them and see how it goes. If they cause jams I'll take them back to Academy and get my money back. Guys, I appreciate the help. I found the AR15.com forums through google. Plus, some buddies of mine have mentioned these forums on some other hunting forums that I frequent. So, I registered. Glad I did. Looks like I will have a bit of a learning curve with my new AR15. The wife is already pizzed off that I bought the rifle. But, she'll get over it. She's a good woman who understands a fella has to have his toys. When I was with TDCJ all of our AR15 mags were mil spec aluminum mags. So that's another reason the Red Jackets caught my eye. They looked like what we used in the agency. But, I'm reading now how good the pmags are. So, they may be on my list of things to get for the AR15 now. |

It's completely normal for those mags, and is nothing worry about Those are USGI and good to go. They just slapped a redjacket floorplate on it and called it theirs. |
| Man, stay safe out there. It sounds like your part of Texas could get a little dicy. We derailed my thread a bit. Sorry bout that fellas. I sorta got side tracked. I found the conversation very interesting. Mods, thanks for understanding and moving the thread to general. I appreciate the fellas who responded and helped to educate me a bit on the mags. |

They sure looked ok to me. But I had never seen any branded with the Red Jacket logo before. Now I just need to accumulate some ammo and hit the range. |
