SOG http://www.amazon.com/SOG-Specialty-Knives-B61-N-PowerLock/dp/B000JD08ZU/ref=pd_cp_hi_1/180-4192754-7865265
This one is rock-solid, the blade is as sharp as any other SOG you'll find, the tools are built well and lock nicely, and the opening operation is incredibly smooth and even as well. Can't go wrong. I love mine. |

SOG PowerLock
I paid about $60 IIRC for it at Lowes . Love it ! . US made too I swapped the sheath out because I didnt like how it rode on my belt , and I popped the covers off the handles as well ( real easy ) as I didnt care for them either. http://sogknives.com/store/S60.html |

As much as I dislike the owner's politics I have two leatherman waves and use them the most. I did have someone who saw my Wave say he didn't like them because they were a little fragile and he had broken a couple, but he said that was at work at some foundry or plant or something. I have a fairly large SOG also and I think that's a sturdier tool, but I like the set up on the wave better for my day to day basically light use. My first one was a Gerber that I still have somewhere. Not one of my favorites |

| I buy Leatherman Waves every couple of weeks out of the local pawn shops for $20 or so. You can buy them at almost any time for that amount of money. I like them better than any of the others by far. I've had Sog, Gerber and even Victorinox....not really that impressed with any of them. |

I've had several Gerber's and Leathermans and none compare to the SOG. |

The Wave is good but the Charge has slightly thicker panels so the handle doesn't dig into your hand when squeezing the pliers. |

My vote is on the Gerber. Cannot remember which model, but you can pull it out and flip out the pliers end with a snap of the wrist. No folding to open it. I have no problem flipping my SOG open with one hand. You will hate the Gerber the first time you use the pliers to grab something tightly and it slips out of the jaws and the handles come together causing you to pinch the crap out of your hand. |

I think I have maybe one or two in my collection. I have probably 30 multi tools of different kinds- I have them all really- it's hard not to buy them when you see them for $10-15 or so. Good trade materials if nothing else. |

I think if you stay with SOG, Leatherman, Gerber, etc., you will find a good tool you will keep. Victorinox has its fanboys as well.
I have a SOG and the only thing I don't like is the tool covers on the handles. They will pop off if you really crank down on heavy wire or anything that can twist the tool in your hand. Other than that, its a smooth tool. One poster above mentioned taking the covers off and that is fine if you are wearing work gloves I guess. But it is a quality tool and you can interchange the tools on it as well . I have a Leatherman Blast that I like - bought 2 used at a pawn shop for $50. Gave one to my nephew and kept one. It looked brand new. Its a good tool and if Tim Leatherman's liberal politics is too much for you, do like posted above and buy one at a pawn shop, yard sale, flea market, etc, used. Lifetime warranty on either one of the above but I think you can replace the tools on the SOG yourself. I don't know about the Leatherman - I'll have to go look at mine. I just keep the SOG in my truck because I don't like a lot of stuff on my belt - already have a holster and pistol most of the time. I don't have any experience with the Gerber's but a buddy of mine loves his Diesel. The cheaper Suspension models have a spring that will keep the pliers open without you having to push them open with your fingers. That seemed like a pretty good feature. Haven't used one though. Stay away from no-name, off brands. There is nothing worse than trying to use a cheap as multi-tool. Its something you give to someone you hate at Christmas. Check out the pawn shops and flea markets. That way if you do break something (unlikely) or lose it, it won't hurt as bad .
