(1) I just re-formatted my hard drive to get rid of on going spyware problems, I mean wiped the sucker clean using the utility disc that came with my PC.

After installing my Windows® XP Home disc I now have access to the internet via my cable modem, and my wireless laptop is working without any software installation from my base PC.

WTF? Did Windows® XP do all the work for me?  It was a complete format and the PC was just like the day I bought it, software wise.

(2)  Does anyone have a "xerox" folder in the "program files" directory. I do,  and there is nothing in it. Kind of  thought it was a folder for spyware before the format since I don't have any xerox products installed.   c:/programs files/xerox/nwwia

(3)  What e-mail program do you use? I'm looking for a new one.

Thanks...

If you bought your pc from a manufacturer like compaq, hp etc then the windows installation disc has all of the extraneous software on it.  a lot of those machines come with spyware/adware preinstalled by the manufacturer, and the windows disc could well have the spyware on it as well.  run adaware and spybot and let them remove all that crap.

Yes. By default, XP is set to use DHCP to acquire an IP address. So if your cable modem is running, all you have to do is plug into it. As far as wireless, you might want to enable WEP on your home network.... Windows' wireless 802.11 settings will automatically connect to "open" wireless connections.

ETA: Which means anyone with a wireless card can access your home network and piggyback on your internet.

The xerox folder is a left-over from days gone past of an agreement between xerox and Microsoft.

It doesn't do anything except annoy people.

This guide tells you how to remove it.
