I've read and own the book, watched the miniseries twice, and am re-watching it again.

If you've never watched/read it, go do it now

I loved the miniseries. I forgot I had the book until I saw this thread.  Never read it.  Will break it out tonight.

I read the book well before the mini series came out and I can say that if memory serves me properally that they stayed very close to the book when making the miniseries.  I loved both the book and miniseries.

Ray Person may be my favorite character from the series.  I love the fact that they got some of the actual guys from that unit into the actual series as well as a few actors with military experience involved with the series as well.  That includes Alexander Skarsgard who was a Swedish Marine before he went into acting.

Yeah seriously.  One steely eyed killer made it sound like his platoon was made up of Crusaders who sat around all day sharpening their knives.

If I recall right they kinda gave a reason for his madness at the end of the series.

While they're all hanging out wondering what to do next, Sixa told the CO 'I'll get back on 'em about the grooming standards' and implied that he gave them a hard time to get their minds off of missing home or the danger or whatever.

Wasn't a Marine but the Sergeant Major's antics weren't far off.

In japan, all 4 branches had to register their vehicles on the Marine Camp.  Those poor dudes weren't allowed to drive until they made E-5 (or E-4) and they couldn't even buy more than a 6-pack at a time.  They would go to the other branch bases to get boo's but they had to take cabs everywhere.

Well, they also aren't allowed to wear 'shower shoes' outside of the shower.  So, when I PCS'd, I had to get my vehicle registration closed out and signed off by the office.  I almost forgot and was at the beach.  I was wearing a t-shirt, swim trunks, and flip flops.  I got to the registration office and there were 2 marine NCO's standing near their car at the entrance of the registration office.

I was walking up and one shouts, "Hey there motivator!  What base do you belong to?"  They were getting ready to tear me a new one for wearing flip flops but as soon as I told them I wasn't a Marine, they had to hold themselves back.

I didn't wear those again

Cpl. Ray Person: [in response to a child's letter] Dear Frederick, thank you for your nice letter, but I am actually a US Marine who was born to kill, whereas clearly you seem to have mistaken me for some sort of wine sipping, communist dick suck. And although peace probably appeals to tree hugging bi-sexuals like you and your parents, I happen to be a death-dealing, blood-crazed warrior who wakes up every day just hoping for the chance to dismember my enemies and defile their civilizations. Peace sucks a hairy asshole, Freddy. War is the mother-fucking answer
