How effective are radar detectors ? Does it depend on your reaction time? Which one is the best? Any personal experiences with them? Thanks in advance |

Here's a site with good info: Radar Busters Radar Detector F.A.Q. |
|
I've owned several over the years. Depending on the quality of the detector, they work well, but "instant-on" radar has gotten really quiet in idle mode and will only be detectable by a really good dectector, and even then only at fairly close range, unless of course they zap someone ahead of you. Laser detector is closer to being a screaming alert that you just got nailed. detecting a laser being aimed at someone else is the holy grail, and is really unlikely. A Valentine 1 is the current state of the art. Bonus is that they will upgrade any older valentine1 unit to watever latest improvements no matter how old yours might be. In today's $, a Valentine1 costs less than an Escort or Passport detector did in the mid eighties. bythe way - the Valentine1 will tell you not only signal strength, but how many different radar sources are being detected (up to 9) and whether the most threatening one is ahead, beside, or behind. It can make all the difference in the world having that directional indicator. |

The posted speed limit here is between 65 and 75 on the highways but routinely people run ten to twenty over that - some more then that even. The traffic - 95% of the people will be sailing along at those speeds everyone fighting for a ticket. The cops could shoot fish in a barrel but know that if they pull someone over it will start a traffic jam as everyone rubber necks so only the worse cops on their worse days stop someone. I do try to drive slower in other states. |
|
I drive 500 to 2000 miles a week. Since Monday I have been in my truck for 8 hours. By the time I get home tomorrow it will be 12 hours. I drive 5- 6 mph over the max speed limit in Texas and Louisiana. I don't get pulled over or ticketed. It's one less thing to worry about. |
LARifleMan, I've had a COBRA 360 Laser Superwide 4Band for about 9 years, $ 169.00. It works front, rear and sides, indicates visually and audibly the type of radar detected and is even cordless. No, being cordless has had no impact on its performance, and 4 AA batteries last a long time. Turning itself off after no signal for an hour is not an issue, you just push the on button and it resets again. It has saved me at least 5 tickets in Florida, NJ, NC and here in California. Buy any one of the name brands and you can't go wrong, and also they help you improve your driving habits by being more alert, thus less careless. No problems with instand on or dirtpile reflections. These things make reception more poor, but I've still been able to react and not be cited - not so for the guys who then blow by me and get stopped!![]() Radar Detector Tests Bel & Escort are outperforming Valentine and Cobra for the 2004 tests. |

I of course am kidding, I just wonder how many people will go off the deep end without reading this statement first Hunter out... |
NEGATIVE, Gamma... don't confuse the tightness of your tinfoil with the safety of everyone around you on the highways. ![]() As a highly trained professional driver that has accumlated nearly 1,000,000 safe miles in an 80,000 pound truck I find your comment flat out REPULSIVE

How about the time I was chased by a guy with a gun on BW8? I did 120 easy and outran the sorry sack of shit instead of having to get into a gun figh (without a gun I might add) with a lunatic. Remember the Alamo, and God Bless Texas... |
I didn't mean to offend. Nor to imply that I drive in an unsafe or illegal manner. Just relating my frustration at what I have personally experienced on the highways. I'm not sure if the code of conduct post was directed at me, if so I will remove my post forthwith. |
How about it? I have not been every where (actually, in the continental US, I HAVE) or seen everything. Two things I know to be the solid gold 100% truth. 1) Nothing is 100% 2) No matter what I post, or how much I back it up, someone is always gonna think they have a better argument.

| My 7.5 year old K40 still works.... I paid like 300 bucks for it. It came with a garantee, that K40 will remburse you for fines for the first year of ownership. They lost money on me! one ticket was $168.00 and the second like $130.00. And the third......well i didn't send it off fast enouf. Me and my roomate had some girls come visit. He tore up my reciept and wrote Phone numbers on the back side and i did'nt realize he did that. Anyway they will still nail you, unless you understand that sometimes there is nothing you can do but follow hte speed limit. |
Fixed it ! |
Of all the traffic accidents I have responded to as a Volunteer EMT, as a LEO, and seen or witnessed as a truck driver, I have never heard of somebody getting killed or having a property damage accident because "Aw shit, that Bob was driving safely again! I told him to get the lead out, that all that slow driving at the posted limit would catch up to him!" Speed kills. Plain and simple. Yes, cars can go so much faster than the posted limit. Yes, some folks think they can handle their car at 90mph. The truth is, many many many accidents and highway fatalities are cause because some dipshit rookie driver who thinks he/she is the most important creature in God's universe was in a hurry... I say, if you get killed in a traffic accidnet, there's better than a 50% chance YOU DESERVED IT |

Try a motorcycle. All the exhilaration and freedom you can get OUTSIDE of yer cage! |

OK, so your telling me that I deserved to die earlier this year when i flipped my Ranger 4 times and wrapped the back end around a telephone post because I WAS GOING TEN MILES UNDER the posted limit in the rain. The trooper said he thought the person, me, should have been dead when he pulled up. Don't talk to me about obeying the traffic laws I've come to grips with the fact that the road is a hazard, but I keep myself in check to a point. You have to live life while you can not made of steal and not stupid I know that |
But you were still going Too fast for conditions. But it's not your fault, your an amature. "You have to live life while you can" Yes, yes... and all the "Attack life, it's gonna kill you anyways" Bravo! Cheers!
|
And the rest of us are out here waiting for one of you to make a mistake so we can avoid the "worst case scenario" and all go home! |
Not according to the NHTSA's database. According to them 38% of all fatal accidents are alcohol related vice 3.4% that were caused by speeding. Sorry, but the facts dispute your assumption....The info can be found here :NHTSA Website In short, speed kills is a myth! The statistics prove otherwise. I'm about to rack out so I don't have the time to get into it right now, but rest assured I will be bright eyed and bushy tailed tomorrow for this debate. One parting thought: Ever wonder why the fatality rate per 1000 motorists on the Autobahn, which has no speed limits, is lower than that of the US, which does? Hmmm.... |
Or not speeding? That argument goes both ways.
Uhmmm. Yes it is, and there are stats there from all 50 states.... [qoute]And NTSA only gives statistics not actual numbers. Might want to actually take a look at the NHTSA website. |
You might just want to calm down and present your argument in an intelligent, rationale manner as opposed to resorting to insults (it lends more credence to your argument)...BTW, those stats I gave came directly from the NHTSA website. That, to me, is the definition of facts...Have a nice day... |
Then getting pulled over by a cop would have been the best thing for you |
Woah, what's up with that? You post this message at you because someone tells you to not speed? |
