YA wanna hear even more heresey?? That movie was a direct rip off of a real historical event. This was what actually happened to Russia during world war II! The writer just switched Americans for Russians and put the Russians In place of the Nazis. Except for that and modernising the equipment, all the plots and stories of that movie were a direct rip from eastern front war stories. What a load of BS! Tell the truth hollywood, for once!

OKAY, sorry I gotta do this but I gotta let some of you know.

Russia is never going to invade America, all those countless hours taking notes on how to through the russian and cuban commies out was a waste of time.

Chances are the only time you'll get to use your uber tastic fantastic tactical gear is he day you snap.

It was a movie guys, not some secret training video.

Gotta agree with O.A. (which Ive come to understand is blasphemy in itself , sorry OA) He is right the whole concept is ridiculus , never mind they'd have all froze to death in the first winter , living in a camp through an entire winter high in the Rockies...Think Stalingrad . But it was a nice hooray for us flick . under estimating the Rocky Mountians is a bad way to die and you will . RL

And the reason they never will invade is because of all the uber tastic fantastic tactical gear......and uber fantastic guns too.

Compared to any other action movie of the 80's Red Dawn is simply fantastic.

Have you seen a better fake Hind in a 80s movie?  It's a decent job for a fairly low budget movie in the 80s when Hinds were top shit.  How about better T72 copies, seen many in other movies?  They did a damn good job with those and they had some cool scenes with them.  See too many other movies in the 80s where they went to the trouble to build fake AK74s for the spetnaz troops instead of just giving them standard AKMs?  (used in the snow ambush scenes, only thing that stands out is the bakelite mags have the standard 7.62x39 mag angle...)  They went to the trouble to build RPKs outta Valmets too (not much done besides a stock swap really though), so a SAW-type weapon would be represented and actually used.

No other movie from back then, and most today don't even give enough of a shit to try to use weapons that look plausible, these were rare guns to have in the US back then too.  They also at least try to have some resemblance of tactics in their ambush scenes and stuff, totally unheard of in any other 80s action movies I can think of.  As a result of all this it has better action scenes than most of the movies made since and certainly movies made back then (think Commando style garbage...).  Is there a better SHTF movie out there?  I don't think so.  I think it still stands up to movies today well, I love it.  Sure the story isn't the most plausible but neither are zombie or alien movies...

This movie was also incredibly politically incorrect.  Kids with guns, doing a fairly massive amount of killing.  One of the more violent movies ever made at the time I believe, yet it never turns into a lame-fest like Rambo or Commando.

Red Dawn was great and is a classic, not that everyone has to like it but I feel sorry for you that you can't enjoy it.  I loved it then and still watch my DVD copy fairly often compared to most other movies I have...

in the rockies? weren't they suppossed to be in texas?

I know they have some mountains in texas, not that high like the rockies, but seemed real enough in the movie for some texas mountains.

how come that robert guy got himself killed on purpose at the end when he confronted the hind on those rocks? He was gung ho and seemed like he would have had a lot to fight for still, but he gave up.
Also seems like they would have been easy targets for the hind when they were on horseback.
But I know it was the '80s.

Were you even born in 1984 when Red Dawn came out? Different time and different period. At that time, Russia was our biggest fear. Guess you've never seen a missle silo have you? You may not like this movie, but at the time when it came out, it was probably the most realistic senario of the day.

I was stationed at Fort Rucker when this came out. I saw it in the base theater. When it was done, thunder would have been drowned out by all of the noise. It was awesome!

[#45]

AND, back then, this was state of the art motion picture action at it's best.

You have been acustomed to digital computer made movies for too long. In 1984, we didn't have Industrial Light and Magic. Watch the very first Star Wars movie put out in 1977 and you'll see what I mean. Compared to today's movies, movies made before 1990 are on the same technical level as silent movies.

They were in Colorado(I think).  The Air Force pilot was from Texas and said the state was overrun by an assortment of Latinos.   edit: kind of like now, only they had weapons

Robert turned into a f'ing nut, thats why he attacked the Hind, in my opinion.

I thought the movie was cool.  First PG-13 movie btw.

Very well said AR-15Fan, esp. the last paragraph. For the time it was made Red Dawn was setting the pace of movie making technology BUT more importantly it was the right movie at the right time. America was ripe for it, the cold war was winding down so public awareness was there, its a great patriotic movie which I think we need more of. Their's not enough cohesion in today's society and thats something lost on our youth. Most youth that aren't in the mil have no sense of themselves in anything much less american society.

Anyway I think it was a great movie and after a good day at the range and over several many beers its great to watch while cleaning my guns. I think oly is just stirring the pot for fun, deep down I bet he loves it

I haven't seen it in years. I saw it in the mid or late 80's. I think stuff like that can shape a kids mind. That's probably why I'm here now.

Thanks RED DAWN!!!
