Family has some property in Central CA coast with many wild pigs on it.  When I was a CA resident, we hunted them often, but it was always with bolt guns.  I have been in Idaho for almost 10 years, and thus, have amassed a nice collection of firearms that may or may not be lawful in CA...

I am wanting to take a couple of my 7.62 AR's down there to bowl some pork over.  One is a 16" PWS Mk216 (with PWS's FSC 30, which is a "flash suppressing compensator).  The other is a JP LRP-07, 22" barrel with a JP muzzle brake.

Now, IIRC, I know I have to have 10rd mags and a bullet button on each rifle, but I vaguely remember some restrictions as to what you can and cannot have on your rifle as far as flash hiders/compensators/muzzle brakes are concerned.  Am I okay with what I have presently?

Second is a general question - can we even use AR's to hunt with in CA?  In Idaho they don't really care what you have, as long as it is under 16lbs and no electronic sight systems (red dots).

I think I am safe with my God-forsaken lead bullets Well, until 2019, anyway (from what I have read)...

I know I can look this shit up, but I am a lazy bastard and am just hoping some of you have already jumped through these same hoops.

Thanks much.

Bullet button exempts you from the evil features restrictions. As long as you have Bullet Button and 10rd mag go crazy with evil features.  Save for NFA features.

Unless it is a suppressor, muzzle devices are ok. You need 10 round mag, bullet button, and an "off-list" lower. Lead is ok unless it is a state wildlife management area. Other than that, happy hunting!

Doesn't the bullet button turn it into FA though?

LOL!!! I like that!

Crap, didn't even think about the damn list of banned lowers...off to check, but I am thinking that when they created that inane list that PWS and JP may not have even been up and running?  One can only hope!

Also, traditional pistol grips are okay, right?

I'm trying to decipher this "flowchart" on calguns, but it is maddening...I can't even begin to fathom how the hell they believe a pistol grip aids in the wholesale slaughter of individuals as opposed to a traditional buttstock/palmswell????

Your pistol grip and lowers are GTG.  So is your flash hiders...on a bullet button'd lower.

As to hunting with an AR in CA, I don't have that info.

I don't want to confuse you -- BUT -- if you don't like the bullet button, there is another way to go....called the "California Featureless Build".  In a Featureless build, you have NO Bullet button, and can actually use pre-ban standard cap mags (if they were in the state prior to the ban).  However, the Featureless Build also requires NO Pistol Grip, No Adjustable Stocks, and No Flash hiders (brakes are OK).

Personally I prefer a featureless build , in spite of not having a pistol grip, to a bullet button.......but then I'm competing, not hunting.  I imagine fast mag changes are not so much an issue in hunting.

If it is in the Condor Zone, then lead bullets are NOT okay.  You will have to have lead free projectiles to hunt wild pig, in the Condor Zone (I refuse to use the real name of the act).

this guy nailed it. if you want to get fancy and ditch all the "evil" features including a pistol grip you can even run a actual mag release. But for hunting I see no problems with a bullet button and a 10 rounder.

I think PWS is on the list IIRC

Where in Central CA? Condor Range my friend. I would bet money the land you're planning to hunt falls in it.

At a glance I misread the topic as "california haters".

Lead-free regs will limit your ammo choices, even for a sidearm.

I am shocked that anybody hunts in California.
Considering their rangers have jammed people up for breaking the no loaded guns in vehicles laws over firearms sitting on truck tailgates at shooting areas.

Walking around in the woods with a loaded firearm here sounds like as much fun as playing hopscotch through a minefield.
