He would have had to apply for and be accepted to OCS. I'm suprised he wasn't recruited for OCS, he certainly was officer material.

won't college get you a rank above private if you enlist and don't do OCS?

Now, now gentlemen, you are asking for some idiot liberal to actually research his work BEFORE he publishes it.  That is really expecting too much.

I don't know what it got you back then, but these days a degree gets you SPC.  At the time it might have gotten you the same.

Also, he did not have ROTC.

So he had his degree.  That would automatically move you up from private would it not?

Yes.

Nowadays, people with degrees automatically get E-4 in BT/AIT.

"Bubba was my very best good friend.  We were goin' into the shrimpin' business together. . Instead, he died right there by that river in Vietnam.  And that's all I got to say about that"

Best scene in the movie.

Not that it really matters but, in the book he did not graduate from college.  He was there to play FOOTBALL!!!!  He became a professional wrestler after college.  If I remember correctly, he was called the dunce!!!!!

Pat Tillman graduated (I think) from Arizona State and enlisted in the army after 9/11 and was a private.  Please correct me if i am mistaken.

My buddy finished his degree at the University of Michigan and went into the Navy.  He had to take an enlisted billet because he wanted to become a SEAL and there were no officer billets left.  From my understanding he said the officer and enlisted relationship was a lot different in the SEALS and they were much more relaxed about it then in the regular forces.

A degree was not required to be an officer in the 60s, we had guys with high school diplomas leave basic training and go right into OCS at Ft Benning in 1969. Lt Calley is a good example. They were so short on NCOs that NCO academy was four weeks, called them shake & bakes, Left as E-5s, top three in each class got E-6.

Actually, Lt. Calley was a junior college dropout.
