I created an account back in spring just so I could look at some pictures someone wanted to show me, but then never logged back on again. In the mean time, I had a lot of "friend requests" pile up, so I figured I better sign on and try it out.
Now I have just a couple questions: 1. Is there any way to keep certain "friends" from seeing who my other "friends" are? 2. Where do the "friend suggestions" come from? Most of them I've never heard of, but some are people I haven't talked to in years. My only guess is that maybe at some point a long time ago, we had some email correspondence, and they have their email address linked to Facebook and it's automatically suggesting them as friends now. |

I get facebook friend requests from random people that I do not know.
The "suggested people you might know" thing is creepy accurate. I think if you give facebook access to your email it not only accesses contacts but also scans all your emails and looks for names/email addresses within correspondence. I could be wrong. |

I've gotten some really weird "recommendations" based on people on my AIM list that I haven't talked to in years, people in my email contacts list who I might have only emailed once or twice, people I went to middle school with (how it finds that out, I don't know). A lot of them are random people who are friends with people on my friends list. I don't think there's any way to "censor" your friends list so people can't see who else is on it. |

Nope 2. It's just a list of people who have friends in common with you on Facebook. So if Billy, Timmy, and Joe are on your friends list and you have Larry as a suggested friend, that is probably because he is on Billy, Timmy, and/or Joe's friends lists. |

Your friend suggestions are based on the people that are your friends. Facebook looks at your friends and who they're friends with and so on and put two and two together. Often times your friends are also friends with other people you know... get it? I don't know about keeping your friends hidden from others... I know you can assign certain people restricted access to your profile, but I don't know if that includes what you're looking for.

You can hide your whole friends list from certain people. Settings> Privacy> Profile> Friends - Add names to the "except these people" You can also create a list of friends and hide things from them. I have a 'Limited' list. I think friend suggestions come from mutual friends and from contacts you might have imported from your email. |
