My wife went in today with a swollen finger. She does hair for a living and her knuckles are constantly cracked and bleeding. Nothing new. Today though, her pointer finger was completely swollen, painful and hard to use. She has been somewhat sick this week. She's had a couple fevers and general cruddy feeling.

Well one of her clients mentioned that a lot of MRSA is going around and it feaked her out. There is a definate red line moving from her finger up her wrist. She went to the doc this afternoon. He said it looks like a Strep infection. He gave her a shot of heavy duty antibiotics and wrote her a script. He told her to take the weekend off work and to go to the E.R. tomorrow if there is no improvement. He said it an move really fast.

So we are kind of freaked out because we looked up Strep infections online and found a bunh of info on Flesh Eating Bacteria. The doc never said anything like this but should we be worried? There is currently a small cut or crack on her knuckle. The whole finger is badly swollen and there is a faint red line moving up her wrist. Should the ABs knock this out or should we be worried about something worse. Also, is our 4 month old baby at any risk of infection? Thanks.

Keep the area covered to protect the baby.

Mark the current red margin with marker. If it continues to spread with the oral antibiotic, go to the hospital for IV antibiotics.

I disagree.  My opinion is to rub the oil from 3 garlic cloves on the digits opposite the initial wound.  Then take 7 crushed baby asprin and sprinkle in hair after shampooing.
Lastly, take ethernet cord and make a tourniquet around the femur.

Not a Doc, but have knowledge of MRSA.  I wouldn't worry too much about the flesh eating type.  However, watch the wound.  If it continues to grow/spread after the oral meds, GET TO THE ER STAT!

I'd suggest she wear latex type gloves when she is able to return to work.

Should the tourniquet be just above the knee or higher up? Her fingers are all stinky now. Her's hoping this works.

That's part of the problem. Latex makes her break out to. She has pretty bad excema and had to quit doing nails years ago because of the rashes. She is really talented and makes pretty good money. She's been doing this about 11 years. She tries to wear latex free gloves as much as possible but her hands are always a mess. This is just a lot worser than usual.

Keep the open wound covered and use some type of topical antibiotic on the band-aid. Strep is usually very responsive to antibiotics. Your wife's finger should show marked improvement by tomorrow.

I would not worry too much about the "flesh eating bacteria".

Could progress to cellulitis, or even worse - osteomyelitis.  She needs to take ALL of the meds as prescribed in the script.  Do not discontinue even if she feels better and her symptoms go away.
