I was reading this thread:

Reporter was a piece of shit.  But I remembered something I wanted to ask a few of you about.

6-8 years ago I was pulled over for speeding in Kansas City.  (I was speeding, I paid the ticket.)

It was rush hour traffic, near downtown with no grass shoulder and concrete barricades.  Cop was on a motorcycle.  Traffic was insane and there was very little margin for error.  He lit me up, I immediately hit my flashers and slowed.  I was 100 yards from an exit that afforded a grass shoulder.

I was heading for that exit to get him and myself off that highway.  He got on his loudspeaker and asked me to pull over immediately so I complied.

He was professional and courteous, asked why I didn't pull over immediately.  I told him.

So what is the deal?  Is it difficult to discern who is going to run if they don't pull over immediately?  Rural interstate I could see just pulling over anywhere.  I figured the guy would prefer not standing 2 feet from traffic.  We were also on a curve that was sharp enough, and traffic was heavy enough, that it was impossible for people to safely clear the right lane and merge into the left two lanes.

Just curious for the opinions of people who do the job.  It just seemed excessively dangerous for him and for me as well.  Yes I was speeding and I had no cause to dispute the ticket but I was in a 3/4 ton truck with a company logo on the side so it was a 'flow of traffic' speeding incident, not me weaving through traffic or the like.  I think a different officer got me on radar and I was easy to identify because of the vehicle.

Cops know where to pull you over.
At least that is what was said in a thread about this.

I was about 50 feet from the turn lane to make a left into a 7-11 when I got lit up once.
My thought was "hey, well lit parking lot" so I pulled in and parked.

Got a red faced angry, gun at low ready female cop screaming at me for that move.

The road I was on had a 50mph speed limit and no shoulder. Yeah, sorry for making sure we were both going to be safe from some idiot plowing into us.

Do what the cop says.  If he gets hit it is on him.

But you are correct, that cop made a poor decision.

You could call the PD, let them know that you acknowledge you are being pulled over, and are looking for a safe place to do so. It should be relayed to the officer.

I always appreciate people pulling into a parking lot or wider shoulder, even if it take them a minute to get there.

Now if they look like they're just buying time,  reaching around, concealing something, or something "feels off," it might be different.

So I guess the answer is, it depends

I do not stop where there is no shoulder, I've always pulled off onto small gravel roads  or waited for a shoulder up ahead if one did not exist immediately. None of them have ever gotten pissy at me.

This a stupid fucking place to stop, I don't care what anyone says. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BMSeqkql4Q&feature=youtu.be

Stop where they light you up

Sometimes people are looking for a safe spot like you did
Sometimes people are looking for a place to stab their dope or gun

If the officer stops you in an unsafe spot, they "might" have a reason for it, or they just might be an idiot.

I had a opposite side of the coin one time.

I was building pre-fab sheds. You pick up the shed and assemble it on a customers site. I picked one up the evening before.

I get home and find my plates for my new trailer arrived. With the trailer loaded it was impossible to reach where the plates bolted on without crawling underneath or unloading it. So I throw the plate and extra bolt and nuts on the dash. I'll just put it on when I unload.

Well I get pulled over on the way right at rush hour. This is a road that leads directly to downtown St Louis. Its packed.

He said do you have registration for the trailer since it had no plate. I said yes I did and I just got the plates in the mail. He asked why they where not attached. I said I would put them on when I unloaded as it was very hard to get to.

Not good enough. He wanted them on right now. Like get out and put them on now in traffic. I refused. He said he would write a ticket.

I welcomed it. I also expect to see me in court. Well he went high and low looking for something else. Asked to search my truck. I refused. He said he would call for a dog and it may take 30 minutes. Call. He ended up let me go with a warning.

That was a mistake because he derided everything latter and said he only asked me to put them on in a safe place as soon as possible.

He radioed ahead because I was stopped for no plate 2 more times in 15 miles. I went over it with both and they said it was more than reasonable. I went into the stop with the second one. He gave me a supervisors number.

He lied through his teeth. Kind of hard when they pulled dash cam footage.

A motorcycle traffic stop is different then making a stop in a car.

Fuck a whole bunch of that.

I've had them empty stores and bars to come out after me before on a stop.

You never know if they are pulling off at a friends house, maybe it's home.

Officer controls the stop. When the violator starts deciding when and where, that's when people get hurt.

Pulled into a parking lot after getting lit up I  the #1 lane on a 3 lane street in North Las Vegas about 2 blocks from home.

I was told I was wrong for doing that so the 3 times I've been pulled over since I stop right in the travel lane I'm in.
