If I took a piece of galvanized pipe and put it in a fire would it burn the coating on it off or is it the entire pipe that releases the poisonous gas.
Because I can only find a 2 inch galvanized floor flange within like 80 miles of my house. I've been looking for a 2 inch black iron one and I can't find one. This is going into a homemade forge. |
| Buy some muriatic acid from any hardware store. Dump some into a bucket of water until it's about a 50/50 blend. Always put acid in water not vice-versa. Put flange in acid. It'll devolve the galvanization off in just a few minutes. Do not sniff the fumes. Do it outside and not near anything else you like. Neutralize the acid with baking soda. Once totally neutralized it's a salt solution that can be dumped down the storm drain. |

I can get one near here thanks for the offers tho.
The pipe supply place is closed here, and the farm supply store only has galvanized. We have a big ass fire going at home I was just going to get the one I could get today and chunk it in so I could get the thing assembled this weekend. Instead of next. I will just put this off untill next weekend and order the parts at the local supply store during the week. I didn't realise 2 inch black iron gas pipe wasn't a commonly carried size around here...

Muriatic acid (HCl acid) will remove the zinc.
The zinc will melt off at about 900F, but who knows how it will come off? There may still be patches. After dipping in the acid, rinse the piece off thoroughly in warm-hot water, and dry off immediately. Use a heat gun. HCl is used by galvanizers and people who buy it in industry to check coating weight by stripping off the zinc from a coupon of known dimensions. You weigh the coupon hefore and after the strip to find the coating weight. |

Fucked him up pretty bad for two or three weeks, and he was pretty lucky. OP, be patient and get the correct stuff... don't put your or others' health at risk to save a bit of time. |
