Since the free floating handguards are only attached at the upper reciever and not at the gas block does it tend to be lose or does it fit just as tight as the A2 handguards? It seems to me that it wouldn't be as tight. I've never picked one up but thats how it looks to me. I would appreciate any advice on this from anyone who has one.

It's just as tight.

Assuming you're talking about a reputable manufacturer's product, installed properly.

I have 2 Service Rifle Match uppers with the Armalite free float tubes on and the hand guards are rock solid to boot.

Also your sling is mounted to the end of the tube and a strong fellow like myself can put lots of torque on the tube so it has to be strong enough for everybody else.
