I'd like to set up a digital picture frame that always shows the current (as of the last few minutes, anyway) weather radar.  I can set up a server somewhere on the internet that could place weather radar .gif's or whatever to an RSS feed or email address or URL.

I'd like that to happen whether there's a nearby PC on or not.  I don't want it to be dependent on a PC.  I want it to just go through the wireless router and grab the image (or video) from an online source.

I've seen a few different options, like estarling, that all have their own account management websites and seem very proprietary.  I don't want it to go to joe.com to find your RSS settings, and then look up that RSS feed, or whatever.  I just want to be able to hand it the direct URL or RSS feed source or whatever.

Any of you guys have any ideas on this?

I'm not totally sure but I doubt that a digital picture frame is going to support the needed commands to acquire images from a source other than a file from a card or hard drive attached by usb etc.    They don't really function like a PC a PDA or similar device.  They lack the processor power to do much beyond fetch and display image files from a set location.  Good luck on it though.  Sounds like an interesting idea.

Hmm.  That estarling device does something sort of like that (though not as simple, actually), as does a Kodak device.

I'd like to avoid the middle men, though.  I can generate my own RSS feeds and image feeds, simply scavenging radar imagery off of whatever weather website has the most appropriate.  But, what's the point, if the device website will be shut off in a year, rendering that capability unusable.
