Only a few downsides here, 1 handgun a month law, no carry anywhere that serves alchocal(resturants too, not just bars), but other than that's it's ok. No paperwork in most areas to buy handguns though. All you need is 2 forms that have you VA address on them, utilites bill, bankstatment, license, ect..
All-in-all not a bad state. Property tax sucks, but what do you expect in a commonwealth? |

misanthrope747, i believe i can help you with roanoke. i was a police officer there. my wife wanted to move back home to mich, or i would still be there. roanoke is a nice city to work in. but i would not live in the city. roanoke county borders the city, salem is great and my favorite is franklin county. 15 min drive from downtown roanoke, your out in the country, taxes are way lower than roanoke city. when i retire i will most likely move back to the roanoke area. oh yea franklin county is the moon shine capital of the world.

VA is a nice state to live in IMO, I don't know what the work situation is out in that part of the state so I can't help you with that. I do think the work situation is better in the Blacksburg area though.
As bulldog pointed out most anything goes here, they also have open carry in the state if you wish. You just can't open carry in cities with populations over a 150k if I remember correctly. There is also lots of great members from this site here in VA. I think you would be quite happy living in this fine state. Best of luck. |

Virginia truly is a "gun friendly" state and Roanoke is a beautiful area. Money Magazine just listed it as one of their top places to retire. This means you have a duty to move their and offset all of the liberal anti-gun A.. Holes who will respond to Money Magazine's findings regarding Roanoke. Additionally, there are a lot of Virginians on this board some have sponsored some incredible shoots. You can do a search over the last year and see some great posts and pictures. The pro-gun lobby has considerable power in the state, even the current democratic Governor Mark Warner, went to the NRA promising no new anti-gun legislation if they would stay out of the campaign endorsing neither candidate and remaining neutral. The governor was true to his word (so far) and signed a pro-gun bill prohibiting local government's from banning licensed CCW citizen's from carrying in municipal buildings.
I am active duty Army living in Norfolk and sadly am being transferred to the New York City area, but I am keeping my house in Norfolk to finance my retirement move to Roanoke. The down side is all the good gun shows are in SE Virginia, (Richmond and Hampton) so you would have a little drive. Regards from Norfolk |

Welcome to the Commonwealth.
Just a few rules. 1: Thy shall live in the country well away from the city. 2: Thy shall only vist NOVA, not live there. 3: Thy shall vote a Republican Governor in office in 3 years. ( I tried this time) I you do those few things you should start off good. Roanoke area is nice. Try looking at Lynchburg also. A little smaller but still a nice town. Winters are a little rougher the more west that you go. Bedford county is experincing a lot of growth now. It is located between Roanoke and Lynchburg. Nice area, mountains are nice! The smaller the community the more I like it. So it all depends on your lifestyle. If you are looking to go nightclubing, then the smaller community might not be what you are looking for. |

Nightclubbing is definitely not for me. The older I get the less I can deal with the concentrated smoke. And the music, that's even worse, at least here in Columbia MO.
I'm looking for a place way out in the boonies with a high speed internet connection so I can work from home most of the time. Yeah, and with a gold mine on it too. :) It takes a lot for me to vote for anybody other than a Republican. I'm starting to like the Libertarians though. I just wish they had more of a chance to win. So, I usually vote so that a democrat (patoeey) doesn't win. What are the winters/summers like there? We get about 20 inches of snow and the temp seems to stay around 35. We mostly get rain/ice/sleet. And it drops to -10 or so for several days every year. Summers are in the 90's and humid here. A few days over 100 are normal. |

i've lived in SW Va. (Roanoke/Blacksburg Area) for the past 4 yrs. God bless it. - shall issue permit - CAN carry in a place that serves alcohol, just not concealed... - allow full auto. but have some dumb "agressive use" clause. - Blacksburg Chief of Police is very VERY cool about NFA items. |

It will change" We had a very mild winter this past year. Summers are HUMID! Can't lie to you on that one. |

I've lived in the Lynchburg,Va area most all of my life. It sure is a great area. Currently I live in the Bedford area and am going to move closer to Lynchburg. Roanoke and Blacksburg are nice too. There is nothing like the mountains of Va.
If you're into watersports we have Smith Mountain lake. It has over 500 miles of shoreline and borders Bedford Co, Franklin Co and Pittsylvania Co. It is full of game fish including huge Striped bass. There are an abundance of stocked trout streams too. If you like hunting, the area has national forests within a relatively short drive( under an hour). Also, there are several shooting ranges sponsored by the national forest service. One is in Wythville, Blacksburg and one in Catawba. If you are into hiking, the Appalachian trail runs near Roanoke. There are also many other smaller trails. If you're a history buff Virginia is filled with our country's history. Lexington is about an hour from Roanoke. Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee are both buried there. The summers here can be a bear. It's hot and humid. The winters can go either way. the past few winters have been relatively mild but sometimes it can get into the teens and rarely into the single digits but does'nt stay there long. We can get snow several inches deep and it be melted the next day. All in all I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. |

I work in Roanoke, and live in the New River Valley, about 15 minutes from Blacksburg. If you need to work in the city, there's no reason to live in the city.

It shall be unlawful for any person to carry a loaded firearm on or about his person on any public street, road, alley, sidewalk, public right-of-way, or in any public park or any other place of whatever nature that is open to the public (i) in any city with a population of 160,000 or more or (ii) in any county having an urban county executive form of government or any county or city surrounded thereby or adjacent thereto or in any county having a county manager form of government. The provisions of this section shall not apply to law-enforcement officers, licensed security guards, military personnel in the performance of their lawful duties, or any person having a valid permit to carry such firearm or to any person actually engaged in lawful hunting or lawful recreational shooting activities at an established shooting range or shooting contest. Any person violating the provisions of this section shall be guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor. For purposes of this section, "firearm" means any (i) semi-automatic center-fire rifle or pistol which expels a projectile by action of an explosion and is equipped at the time of the offense with a magazine which will hold more than twenty rounds of ammunition or designed by the manufacturer to accommodate a silencer or equipped with a folding stock or (ii) shotgun with a magazine which will hold more than seven rounds of the longest ammunition for which it is chambered. |

I live in Augusta County, open carry perfectly legal here. Open carry in Fairfax County not only not recommended, it is illegal (although only a misdemeanor for the first offense, I believe it is a felony for a subsequent event). |

Which means open carry of a pistol is perfectly legal if it DOESN'T have a greater than 20rd mag in it. Read it. You can even carry a rifle, like an AK or an AR as long as you don't have a magazine of "GREATER than 20rds at the time of the offense" in it or a folding stock or a silencer. Open carry in large cities (160,000+) is not prohibited under this state statute. It does limit what you can carry openly, but a revolver or pistol with a 20rd or less mag is legal under this law. Welcome to the Old Dominion. I live in Roanoke and went to school in Blacksburg (VT). Try to live in the SW part of the city or in the surrounding mountains. Don Caldwell, the local CA (Commonwealth's Attorney) will sign for Class III items. Concealed carry is easy to get and is shall issue. And the RRRC (Roanoke Rifle and Revolver Club) is here too. It's black rifle friendly, and we just had a three gun match last month. As far as work goes, there are quite a few jobs available, especially for the line of work your wife is into. The only downside of the are is the growing gay and lesbian population. Last year the paper ran a series of front page articles on the "mushrooming" gay and lesbian population. It wouldn't be so bad if they were like the Pink Pistols (a particular pro-gun gay group). Again, welcome. If you have any questions, drop me a line.

...is northern virginia really that bad? i ask because i may get to move (with the company i currently work for) to northern virginia. i'd probably end up living in culpeper, fauquier, rappahannock or loudon counties.
based on census and voting data, i thought that most these counties were pretty rural and conservative. are they really as bad as some yall make them out to be? |

When people talk about Northern Virginia being bad, they are mostly refering to Fairfax and Arlington Counties, and the City of Alexandria. The places you mentioned are pretty nice. ***Edited to add that Loudon and Prince William Counties may get infected by NOVA liberalism soon though. |
