I was the only bidder on a military surplus canvas bag that my wife wanted to use as a purse. Less than a minute before the auction ended with me having a highest bid price almost $2 over the initial asking price, the owner of the auction outbid me.  He had the first bid at $10.95.  I had a max bid of $12.50

Is some kind of standard practice?  Some kind of seller strategy?

I didn't know the seller could bid on his own item.

I'd report him to ebay.  Seems a little fradulent.

Yeah, I never knew that was even possible.

i don't think he can do it. But its done all the time with shills. look for the bag to reappear in a couple of days and don't bid on it till the end of the auction.

Its not possible.  Look  again it may have been ended by the owner due to not meeting a specific price.

I see it regularly at cattle auctions, sometimes they get stuck buying thier own cows!

I don't know how that's possible on e-bay, though.

The same guy that posted the auctions name was on the high bid.  Now someone elses name is showing up.  WTF?  This seems rigged.

You need to set down the crack pipe and open the window to disperse the fumes....

I'll tell you exactly why you lost - eBay is something called an "auction," and in an "auction" the person with the highest "bid" wins.  Someone "bid" more than you, so you lost.  If you were willing to pay more, then you should've bid more.

This may be a way for him to not have to sell at too low a price.  He'll still have to pay the seller's fees though.  Would they be less than the fees for an auction with a reserve price?

the way the ebay rules go, you set the starting bid, and then if you want (for a fee) you can set a reserve price (price that must be met for the item to sell)

you can NOT bid on your own item to run the price up... this looks kinda shady.  you can't get the seller's remorse on ebay

The auction ended with guitarguy as THE HIGHEST BIDDER. A few minutes later, another name appeared as the highest bidder.

I know what I saw.

It's not possible to bid on your own auction - the web site is coded that way.  Probably what happened is after the auction ended the page's format changed and what you thought was the high bidder was actually the seller.

I know what I saw.

People also see Bigfoot, UFOs, and the Loch Ness Monster.  They need to lay off the drugs, too.

If you search the bid histories of the players, you'll see that cdn111 merely sniped you with 7 seconds left in the auction, seems to be an active ebayer, (much more active than you with a feedback rating of 15) and this is the first time he bid on one of guitarguy1959's listings.  I can't see anything shady going on here, unless you're talking about the Grand Conspiracy entered into by cdn111, guitarguy1959, and eBay for the sole purpose of  charging you 50 cents more for for a shoulder bag.
