| Does anyone have a public works job with a local municipality or state? I'm a veteran currently working in a distribution center but would really like to put my work ethic to use in an actual career field. Anything with better job security and a sense of mission will beat the dead end job I currently hold. I've been working in shipping plus pulling auto parts orders, etc since I left the military a few years ago. Thankful I have a job but not about to re-up in the military. I'm curious what prerequisites are generally required for public works jobs - if most require a CDL for instance or a background in construction. Thanks in advance for any advice that will help me get out of this rut. (FWIW - I lost my GI Bill when I went from National Guard to active duty in 1999 - so no benefits there for training.) |
A background in road/grade construction, surveying, environmental, or engineering is required depending on what PW jobs you are looking for. Most will let you get your CDL after being hired and will pay for it. ETA is is NOT easy to get on around here. In fact I would say it is down right hard. Plus, right now we are on a hiring freeze for non-essential positions, and applications are up like 150% for jobs listed. Good luck to you. |
| Thanks for the feedback. I realize most opportunities are limited with the recession but even if it takes five years I need to get into some type of career path with a future. Still thankful I have "a" job. I recently moved but I should try to make friends with some of the locals - easier said then done when you aren't exactly a social butterfly. |
