I am selling my home in the next 12-18 months.

I saw that Lowes has 10ft. shade trees on sale for $15 each.  Would planting a few of these improve my property value?  My neighborhood is only 10 years old so there are no really mature trees.

I figure if I could spend $30-$45 for 2-3 shade trees and turn that into a $1000 it would be a good deal.

Pretty much anything (good) that will set your home apart from the others will pay off.

Landscaping will help sell a home.

Just make sure you plant the trees in the right place. Avoid digging into underground utilities and place the trees so that they offer the most benefits as to shade and accenting your home.

That would be a very wise decision.

They were nice trees too, red maples and flowering pear trees.

It definitely helps - it creates that "curb appeal".

Porperly taken care of and mulched correctly, those trees should show noticeable improvements in the 12 -18 months you are waiting to list.

Another small detail that pays off big is keep the front entry way spotless.
Remove ALL cobwebs, clean windows, repaint or replace door etc. Its always the little things that
make a big difference.

The primary factor in determining if a house will sell is always location. If your house is in a location where property doesn't sell, dressing it up probably won't help much. If your house is in a location where property does sell, then little things can help the house move faster or sell at the price you want.

The minimum prep work needed to put a home on the market is generally $1500. It cost me $570 just to have my carpets cleaned (3550 sq ft).

Have a realtor walk through the place. They'll be able to tell you where to spend and what to do (homes listed with realtors sell for 7% more than FSBOs for a reason).
