Back in November of 2000, I burned CD's using my PC and the free Nero trial download.  They CD's work on every player I try them on (car, home CD player, etc.) but did not work in our DVD player (that we used for CD's prior to getting a dedicated CD player -- only a few months).

Well, I'm finally trying to burn some more CD's and Nero is letting me download a trial version of their new software.  The CD's are not working in my car of home CD player.

The home computer CD burner is the same -- an Iomega Zip CD Recordable/ReWritable disc drive.  And I'm using the same kind of discs used before to write my 2000 CD's.

Here are the problems with my recent CD's:

1.  The first few tracks do nothing but "click, click, click, click...."

2.  As I get a few tracks in, I can use the "rewind" button to get to music.  Then the music plays but the counter alternates between -0.01 and -0.02 on the counter.

So, there's something written on the CD's that can be detected by my CD players.  But it appears to maybe be compressed prior to the actual start of the segment the CD player reads or something (I'm drawing this conclusion from the -0.01/-0.02 on the counter, so correct me if I'm wrong).

Anyone have any idea what's going on here and how I can correct it?

And, if this is fixable, can I write over (or erase?) the CD's I've already tried to burn?  If so, how?

TIA

Welcome to the wonderful world of copy protection!! Some companies have started putting different types of copy protection on their merchandise, and more will follow. As history shows, it just creates a market for copy protection busters. There are a couple of CD copy programs out that do a good job of copying protected CD's. Do a search on CD Clone and Blind-Read-Blind-Write. They are available for a nominal charge and well worth it, if you plan to copy more CD's (for backup purposes, of course). Blind-read.. does a good job of issuing updates as different copy protect schemes appear. Nearly all of the programs require a CD writer that handles raw data properly, and most list the "good" models on their website.

I'm trying to write files that I've downloaded from Kazaalite.

Will the Blind-read-blind-write software handle the conversion to audio CD's?

I was really new when I came into this back in 2000 and didn't even know that the mp3's needed to be converted to audio CD files.  So, you need to speak sloooowly and clearly, as if you're talking to an 8 year old about burning CD's.  Though, on second thought, the 8 year old probably knows more about this stuff than I do....  [BD]

Have you tried a different program? When I download MP3s, I use MusicMatch to play them and I convert them to .wav using MM as well for CD burning.

One hint I have for you is to make sure you record your music in a single session.

The best way to insure that all players can read your disc is to record each disc all at one time, and choose the "record and close disc" option.

A multi-session cd will play on your computer, but many other devices don't know what to do...

This may or not be your issue, but it's worth mentioning.

Some things to try for burning audio CDs:

- make sure you are using CD-R media, not CD-RW

- try different brands of media, some are more widely compatible than others

- make sure you "close" the disk (the burning software should take care of this for you, as long as you tell it you are burning an audio CD)

- try burning at a slower speed (start at 1x and work your way up)

Glad you are using Nero - it's better than that Roxio crap :)

I've specifically done multiple CD's of the same "mix" just to see if the variable mentioned affect it.  Such as, just burn, then test and burn, etc.  None of these have been interupted.  The actual burn takes about 20 minutes.

Still, nothing....

Does Nero have a copyright protect on it that is sensing something from the Kazaalite downloads?  Is there a way I can pay per download to get the song so I can burn it without the copyright protect?  If so, how much and where?  I have no problem spending $15-20 on a mix CD if that' what it takes.

I don't think copy protection is your problem. The newer "copy protected" CDs are made so that computer CD readers have a difficult time *ripping* them. It has no effect once you get to the burning stage. So if you can play the songs on your computer, copy protect is not the problem.

dmaas:

Is my iomega zip CD (which is Recordable/ReWritable per the imprint on the drive) the CD-R or CD-RW??

And, if my CD burner sucks for audio CD's, what's the best audio CD burner for a reasonable price?  How much and where?

I have one more blank disc and will try that on the slower burn rate with Nero.  I'll shut everything down here, start it with the "test then burn" and let it go all night.  I think the options I had were 4X v. 2X.  Does that make any sense?  I'll have to check it.

Keep in mind, this dude is not a computer guy you're talking to.  I know just enough to get myself into trouble.

Here's my guess....

1) Your computer is too slow.
If your computer is running bunch of programs in the background, this can cause noise on your CD.  You can fix this by buying a faster PC or disabling all programs in the background while you burn your CD.  Watch the buffer capacity while you burn your CDR.  If its down to 60% you got a problem.  Ideally, it should burn at 90% or so.

2) Try another media.  Don't go for bargain no name CDRs.  From personal experience, I know Memorex CDRs (even though its being sold widely) can cause issues.

3) Lower the burn speed.  Try burning it at slowest speed you can.  It takes longer time for completion but it might work.

Hi Corey - yes, the slower burn speed and shutting down all other programs should help.

All CD-RW drives are capable of burning both CD-R and CD-RW media. The difference is in the discs. If the disc says "CD-R" it is write-once (burning is permanent) and can play in audio CD players. If the disc says "CD-RW" it is re-writable (erasable), but won't play in most audio CD players.

I have had good experience with Plextor and Pioneer burners. I would advise you to get an internal EIDE/ATA model rather than an external USB model, since transfer speed might be the cause of your problem. (EIDE is going to be inherently more reliable than USB, although you have to open the computer to install it)

Thanks guys.  You've answered a ton of questions for me.

I will admit that the things different on my computer now from in 2000 is more programs in the background.  I've tried to cut them down, but we still have the most advanced Zone Alarms protecting the PC.  I've always shut everything else down though (email, AR15.com, etc.).

And the disc's I'm using are CD-R's.  So they're toast.  I just didn't know if my burner was crap or not.  CD's are cheap, burners are not.

I'll try the slowest speed and see if that fixes things.  Luckily I've saved the mix in Nero and can just quickly have it up and burning.

Should I shut down Zone Alarms?  I'd prefer to keep it running.

Thanks.  This has been very helpful.

Sounds like I'm burning too fast for my computer (incl. other running software).

EDITED to add that buffer capacity has been 95%+ during the entire burn.

Thanks.  I think I'm starting to understand that the CD burner that I have isn't the problem.

But, as I've said before (numerous times), I don't know shit about computers so cut me some slack.

I didn't know if mine was a CD-R/RW, a CD-R, or a CD-RW.

Thanks all.  I'm going to shut everything down and try that CD burn at a slower speed.  Everyone's help has been much appreciated.

Have been having this problem also. Have 3 different burners on 3 different computers so bought Nero 5.0 to use for burning on all 3 for data exchange and compatability. Has been a headache.
Firstly, InCD (Nero product) uses a different format than what I was using previously (CeQuadrant)- Mount Ranier I believe is the format. When you format the discs the program does write a proprietary instruction set to the CD.
Secondly, when trying to use the earlier CD-R/RW's it could read from older CD-RW's but said you couldn't record to them. Turns out you could. Also, IIRC, the software said that you have to have at least a 5oomHz system to use the product- this blows out using one of the computers for me as far as burning goes.
Thirdly, you can't use the high speed CD R/RW media for the older burners.
Nero has just released a bunch of the patches to remedy the read/writes for different systems/ formats. It is very irritating for sure. Good luck on finding a fix.

Roxio works great for me, and I have little to no tech skills.  Phillips USB external disk.  Mp3's off Kazalite, converted by Roxio, burned ontoo a CDR, work fine in all my players.

I tried it with the slower burn last night and still had this same problem when I went to play it this morning.

My guess at this point is that it probably has to do with the new Nero software not liking something about my system.  I was using the same system (incl. CD-RW drive and even the same batch of blank CD's) as I did back in 2000.

Guess I'll try to see if Roxio has a demo version I can try out.  Or I'll contact Nero.  I'd like to eventually purchase the burning software, but am glad I was able to demo Nero first.  I'd be pissed if I spent $50 on Nero and it didn't work.

Nero acted weird on me too.  I'm getting Rox 5.1 or whatever it is.

Instead of reading a CD and storing it in memory, now stupid Nero always wants to put a .img file somewhere.  I'll tell the developers where they can put it.  Is this some stupid XP thing?  Win2000 never dun this to me.

And it still hasn't worked right for me since I started using this puter with XP.  It did help write over a CD-R which I had some good info on.  Unrecoverable.  I didn't know you could write over a CD-R, though that's what CDRW's were for.  Thanks a bunch for the warning Nero.

One time Nero was pretty funny.  I tried to do it their way with that .img crap.  By the time I was done the .img file was written on the CD as just that, .img![rolleyes]

I just downloaded Roxio.  Seems to have a user friendly interface.  Unfortunately, I burned up 4-5 new discs with my recent Nero experiments and will have to get some more later this afternoon before I can try again.

I'm just glad that I'm not being told that I need a new CD burner.  After all, I need to stock up on ammo for the upcoming IDPA season.  [:)]

I've trasnferred a bunch of CD's to my hard drive at 192Kbps in .wma format.  Can I transfer those to a device like a Rio 500?

FWIW I think the advice to lower the burn speed is good.

I've burned from a G3 Powerbook Mac 233mhz with Roxio and the iTunes programs and both worked and only one cheap CD player would not recognize the CD.  The player in the Honda and all other devices, CD and DVD would play it.

I did experience some seeming failures when I switched the CD burner from USB to Firewire connections.  It acted OK but would quit the session early or cycle at the end as if it would not close the session.  However, all the burned CD's would play.

I'd definitely slow down the burn speed to see if that might solve some minor problem.

AROCK I don’t thing the Rio500 supports WMA format. SonicBlue may have a firmware update that adds WMA. If not you will have to convert the files to MP3.

Corey you might want to get a copy of MusicMatch Jukebox (can be downloaded at www.musicmatch.com), the free version will burn audio CD’s.  Did all the MP3 files come from the same source if so they may just be poorly encoded. Also try this sites forums:

All of the mp3 files came from Kazaalite.  I listened to them online and after download to make sure they played well.  I don't know if they could play well yet have enough defects to burn poorly....

Thanks all for the info!  Great stuff in this thread!

Hopefully I'll have my SHTF mix done for the WI shoot tomorrow.  [;)]

Refinishing PART of the upper is a question I'd pose to Colt.  I don't know that I've heard of it being done but it's possible.  I'd ask Colt if the original finish could be replicated if complete refinish is required.

If Colt can't do the refinish you might talk to Kurt Wala at Kurt's Kustom Firearms on this site.  He's a wizard at this stuff.

What series is your 6721?  Year of manufacture (if known)?

First try with Roxio's demonstrator download gave me a perfect CD.

Thanks for all the suggestions.  This program is a keeper.  I'll probably buy it when my 30 days is up.

For some reason the newer Nero doesn't work on my machine.  And it doesn't have as nice of an interface as the Roxio program.
