My fiancee likes to go shoot with me, but she HATES loud noises.  She wears foam ear plugs AND ear muffs, yet she still complains about the noise and won't shoot anything bigger than a 22LR.  What is the best ear protection out there?  I need to find something to cut the noise as much as possible.  Anyone got any ideas?

When I can I also double up using plugs and muffs.

It really does not matter in terms of expense or quality when you do this.   Quality means lifespan with non electric protection.  There's not much you can do beyond this with the exception of getting a suppressor.

Also, a brake can really amplify the blast from the shooters perspective.

+1

Either you get off on it or you dont.
My way of looking at it....the louder the better...compensator on an SBR with hot loads.
If i cant feel the concussion from the blast, it aint shootin' .

If earplugs inside of muffs arent doing it with just a .22, not much else you will find.
If you go looking, most of the good hearing protection lists the dB rating on the package.
Pick the ones that reduce the amplitude the most.

Good luck

This doesn't work. Sound disapation is a linear equasion, you will only get the higher decibel rated items sound suppression. Check into some of the electronic hearing protecters.

Acually it does work. although you cannot simply add the NR ratings of earmuff and plugs together,
using both will dramatically reduce the overall decibel levels. I don't have a SC
with me now, but -32 NR & -18NR would give you a rating somewhere around
-41 NR. Each +3bd increase in level is perceived as being twice as loud.

I've been looking for a deaf mute girlfriend who has a full set of dentures.

But I am having hard time finding one that isn't over 70 right now.

She sucks as a GF. Find a new GF muff.

Or buy top quality muffs.

She really loves shooting.  I don't mind just plinking around with 22s, and she enjoys that, too.  22s don't bother her, but things like my M4 that are loud bother her.  I appreciate the FEW replies I got answering my actual question.  I'll try being tactful and ignore the posts to get another girlfriend or leave her at home.

Oh, and she DID give me permission to suppress my USP Tactical, but I haven't got teh cash for it yet.

This is what I do when someone is coming with that is going to whine about how loud it is.

First thing I do is go fire the .338 WinMag with the muzzle break. After torching off a few rounds and letting them whine about that, I go to work with the other weapons. By comparison they aren't loud at all.

I don't even wear hearing protection for .22lr.

Ear plugs seem to work fine for me for almost everything else.

I used to have a 338-378 Wby with a brake.  Our range has a tin roof over the benches.  Man that was loud.

I keep hoping that if I just keep her going with me, she'll eventually get used to it.  I remember when I was little that it bothered me to go shoot with my dad.  He's always been in love with the big Weatherbys (30-378, 338-378, 378, 416, 460) and it's always been really loud at the range when he takes his toys.  Now it doesn't bother me.
