Pro-Bush Democrat Keynote Speaker for Republicans

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Retiring Democratic Sen. Zell Miller (news, bio, voting record) of Georgia, who has backed President Bush (news - web sites) for re-election, will deliver the keynote address at the Republican National Convention, Republican officials said on Thursday

Miller, who supported Bush's tax cuts and has consistently voted with the Republican Senate majority against his own party, will speak on Wednesday Sept. 1, the third night of the New York convention, said Ed Gillespie, chairman of the Republican National Committee (news - web sites).

The keynote address at the national political convention is usually given by a major party figure or a rising political star.

The Democrats at their convention in Boston last month gave the job to Barack Obama, a young, black state legislator who is expected to win back the U.S. Senate seat from Illinois from the Republicans.

Miller himself was a Democratic keynote speaker at the 1992 convention that nominated Bill Clinton (news - web sites) for the presidency.

Kerry's little "Miller" problem

I didn't see a republican politician on the DNC stage endorsing Kerry. Now, in front of millions, and with every cable, network, news, and pundit watching, a democratic senator - a colleague of our candidate - will endorse / nominate the entire *b regime.

This will get lots of media play. I hope Kerry has a plan to answer this.

Zell Miller is the yardstick for Democrats to measure how far to the left they've lurched.

Miller used to be representative of the "conservative" southern Democrats. He's the last of his species, the Democrats have driven the rest into extinction.

Im proud to have him has our senator(tear). The democrats never saw it coming when he got into office.

Yup, both Zell and Ed Koch have come out and basically said "We're the same Democrats we've always been, it's the party that has slid so far to the left as to leave us out in the cold".

There's got to be a lot of Democrats out there that fit that description if they would only wake up and be HONEST about their party instead of just being sheep.

He's a flip-flopper! Oh, wait, that's only bad if he's a democrat. Oh, wait. He is a Democrat.

Now is flip flopping good or bad? I can't tell anymore, dammit!

He didn't flip-flop - his party took a giant leftward step further away from him and anyone else with his relatively centrist views. As someone said above, the last of the old "conservative" Southern Democrats...
