This morning at about 0300, my girlfriend started coughing up blood and had difficulty breathing. She at first refused to go to the ER, as she is the Sergeant Major, and everything will be alright because SHE said it will be alright.
After arguing with her for about half an hour, she refused to get a cab, and insisted she drive to the hospital. The doc took one look at her and admitted her. She is on a nebulizer right now, and is going to be staying a few days, and will have a CT scan later this afternoon. The doc told me that the scan is to see if the mass in her lung is a tubercle, a tumor, or an infection. He does not know as of yet. I am only home for a few minutes to charge my phone, and will walk back to the hospital. She's a Buddhist, but I sure would appreciate it if you folks could send a few prayers our way. I am scared to death. She's the best thing that has happened to me in a long, long, time, and I don't want to lose her. Thanks. |

Prayers sent, and since she is a Buddhist I will go to the local temple and drop a coin in to the offering box, too.

She just called me to tell me that she was sorry for arguing last night. I just about lost it, and I can hardly see to type right now.

Well, thanks for the support, people. It means a lot to us. Anyway, she had the CT scan this morning, but the results need to be interpreted. As we had originally been told it would be about an hour for the results, I have to tell you that this leaves me a little worried.
The doc says that the results should be in later today or early tomorrow. Yes, they work on Sundays at this hospital. Bumrungrad International Hospital, where we're staying, has to be the best damned hospital I've ever seen in my life. They were profiled on 60 Minutes awhile back during a piece on "medical tourism." The service by the people is outstanding, the doctors all have practiced in the States, and the tech level is right up there with the best I've seen. As I used to work at the NucMed Unit at the University of Michigan's Kresge Medical Research Center, I say that with all seriousness. The Royal Thai Police Hospital, which would provide her free care, unfortunately had told her last month that nothing was wrong. Let me just say that I'm glad I talked her into going to Bumrungrad. We had a rough night last night, and she doesn't appear to be getting any better, but I am hoping for the best. I am trying to be patient and give it time. I'll give a SITREP as soon as I can. I can read the posts on the ARFCOM "Lite" version, but can't post, with my cellphone. Keep it coming, and I share all the posts with her. Kob khun mak mak kruup! (Thai for "Thank you very much!") Again, thanks for all the support. Semper Fi! Ken |

How old is she, and does she/did she ever smoke? Any changes in her routine (eating, drinking, etc.) in the last few weeks?
I ask this because in the Radiology department where I work I see it all, and am just trying to figure out what it might be based on your answers. I'm not a religious person, but I do offer my heartfelt wishes that her health improves quickly. |
|
Well, she's 40, same as me, never smoked, and no changes in habits. The thing is, Bangkok has a lot of air pollution, and she has been a cop here for 15 years, some of that directing traffic. Thank you all for your support in any way it is being given. Now, for the "Good News, Bad News" part: The Good News is that it isn't TB or a bacterial infection, from the results of the CT scan and analysis of her sputum. The Bad News is that the options left are: 1: Localized fungal infection (unlikely) 2: Benign tumor 3: The Big "C" I'll take Door #2, Monty. The blood around the mass made the CT scan a little less definitive than they were hoping. They are going for a bronchoscopy tomorrow, and hope to be able to get a look at the mass, and determine its malignancy if it is a tumor by taking a biopsy, if possible. So, tomorrow will be Game Day, guys. I had to leave after talking to the doc, as I didn't want Ooy to see me so upset. I had to ask the doctor about the likelihood of cancer in rather coded and vague terms, so Ooy wouldn't start thinking along those lines, but I could tell by her eyes when I mentioned it that it worries the doc. Thank goodness Ooy's English isn't that far along yet. My business partner called me from Taiwan this morning, and offered his support to assist with the expenses not covered by insurance. That took a big load off of my mind, I have to tell you. Thanks, Cesar! I have been sharing the posts and emails and IMs with Ooy, and she told me to tell you all, "Thank you." Keep 'em coming, fellas (and ladies!) Semper Fi |

Thanks for the updates - and fingers crossed (and more prayers sent). Glad to hear she's getting top-notch medical attention, and has a top-notch guy standing by her! |
