would it be legal to travel to europe/asia/africa, buy aks, have them torched to BATF specs and shipped to your house?

Unless something changed, wouldn't you have to torch the barrel too?  I was under the impression that that was why the parts kit importation dried up.  The cost of a new US manufactured barrel added into the equation would make the deal less attractive.

Well, having lived in S.Asia for a couple years, an American with money LOOKING for people with guns intending to BUY them is probably going to get you a lot more than you were hoping for

FWIW- I remember you could buy Chinese TT33 knock-offs in 9mm from the local gangsters for about US$40.00 which included one loaded magazine. So I was told.

It would be cheaper and easier to get enough machining equipment to make your own. There isn't really all that much to an AK.

Might be worthwhile just for a boatload of cheap trunnions and bolts.

I know someone who has done it to deactivated AKs...still considered guns by BATFE but not by whatever country he was in. Paperwork, time, and money will get them here..but he was living overseas so he had the time. All parts were demilled prior to importation.
