Wifey and had a discussion regarding characteristics that would have been deal breakers at the beginning of our relationship.
Things that would have disqualified me: 1. a minivan 2. cats 3. smoking 4. obesity 5. non-believer in Christ 6. excessive drinking 7. any thought of getting back with ex 8. being an asshole 9. poor kisser 10. inattentive 11. STD 12. drug use 13. family that hates newcomers and the big killer... 14. democrat Things that would have disqualified her: All of the above except #1, and..... 15. dislike of firearms 16. dislike of movies involving guns 17. Yankee's fan 18. Texas Longhorn fan 19. irritating laugh 20. princess attitude Does this pretty well line up with GD's standards? |

If this were my wifes list I would have been done at 6,8, and 12. I have reformed myself since then I've cut back the drinking, I'm still an asshole, and I've battled my demons of other substance abuse. |

-Doesn't like animals -Doesn't like kids -Smokes -Drinks excessively -is overweight enough that it interferes with regular intimacy. I don't really mind a little chunk, but there can be too much, of course. -Does not function well as a member of a team and at this point, since my breakup a few months ago, -depression, anxiety, or other mental disorders. Cannot and will not ever, ever, ever go through that again. |

Issues that actually caused break ups for me...
1. Excessive drinking - I dont want to hold your hair while you puke all night. 2. Stupid - Failed out first semester of community college...wtf! go to class b***h! If you show up you pass. 3. Overly religious - Dont waste your time dating a Mormon unless you are Mormon as well. 4. Refused to be exclusive - After a few weeks/dates you either s**t or get off the pot, dont waste my time. 5. Cheated - Enough said. |

Let's see how many rules we can break.... I'm a fatty (she's not) She can be neurotically obsessive over things She drives a minivan We have 3 cats (more hers than mine) I had a shit load of debt when we got married (now, our only debt is the mortgage) She's a vegetarian When we were married, she was pretty liberal (went to Harvard)- she's mellowed as she's aged I can be a real selfish asshole at times That being said, we've been happily married for 23 years, we have three great kids in high school (our oldest, a senior, got a 35 on the ACT and 2100 on the SAT) and the future looks very bright. I accept something like religion, or believing/not believing in God/Christ might be a dealbreaker, but some of you are over the top with your pigeonholing. A minivan? Cats? Vegetarian? Not liking guns? All of these you place ahead of potentially finding the love of your life? You have my pity. |

Things I see as disqualifiers for a serious relationship -- smoker, fat, STDs, any mental disorder (BPD, addictive type, etc...), reckless debt, overly religious, treats animals like people (seriously, that's weird), horrible dietary choices (vegan, or constant sugar high), not physically active and/or doesn't like the outdoors, doesn't take pride in her work and half asses stuff (whether its career, or consistently with little things), inability to make/stick to decisions or have opinions on things, obsession with celebrities/reality TV shows, general lack of awareness of politics/current events, liberal, controlling/overly needy.
So, basically a fit, independent, nurturing libertarian with conviction and similar hobbies and goals. Shouldn't be too hard to find

Absolute disqualifiers:
1) Doesn't like women. 2) Inattentive to personal hygiene. 3) Really, really physically unattractive. (I'm only a 5.1 myself, so my standards are pretty low) 4) Financially irresponsible. (Doesn't need to have MONEY, but needs to be smart with what he does have.) Everything else I can either learn to live with, or break him of. |

I figure I'll take some heat over this but... I don't like my women too smart or too stupid. There is a narrow band of acceptability. The present wife was a bit too smart at first but luckily old age is starting to set in and she is back down where I like her. As for the ex-wife... it turns out she was too stupid after all and only seemed smarter because she used to listen to me. |

| Narcissist, practicing alcoholic or drug addict, pessimist. Pretty much anyone who isn't trying to do and be better. I'm happily married. I believe it's because we've both tried to be and do better rather than change the other person that things have gotten better as time has gone on. |
