Has anyone ever taken the postal exams? I have applied for a position and it has an exam that takes place next week [just learned yesterday]. It says on the www that 60% of all applicants fail the oral exam [following oral instructions]. They say the ability to answer and follow the oral instructions are very difficult. I would like to be as prepared as possible. Patty |
But I've never fired an AK47. You'd think they would give more points for shooting American made full autos than Russian/Chineese stuff? Damn Guberment newho. ![]() Patty |
You have to know for the written test that the AK 47 is the rifle of choice for postal employees. You also have to know when and where the term, "going postal" was first used. BTW: the answer is Aug 20, 1986 Edmond OK. |

I screwed the pooch when I retired from the mil. When you retire, you have (IIRC) 90 days to WALK IN and the Postal Exam. Maybe it wasn't WALK IN - but there was some special concession for mil retirees that civs didnt' I stayed OS for 3 yrs after retirement - made a ton more money, but I wanted to go Postal when I returned to the US. Oh well...I didn't know, and no one told me. Best of luck. |
I believe you still get special consideration if you're military. I was recruited a while back for a depot job and the gal told me if I was a black, ex-military woman she would hire me on the spot. Patty |
Interesting - thanks. Mailing out packages last week, the lady mentioned something about that - she saw my mil ID as I couldn't find my darn debit card, and ransacked my wallet. I have no idea why she offered it - maybe I look like I need a job. Calling the PO is on my to-do list for this week. Anyway, keep us POSTAL...err...POSTED. |
| I took it in April. Pay attention to the part of the test that involves having to memorize address snipets ie: rose ave 220-560 etc... They do not tell you but you can write on your answer sheet or book (I cannot remeber) to help remember once they say go. You get 5 or 10 minutes to memorize the address blocks. Then they will say begin, at which time immediately write down what you can remember to help you answer the questions. I took it when they gave it over 2 or 3 days with probably 100 people each time. I have interviewed once but I think it is just a matter of time. The guy pulled the top 12 scores and I was one so I know I am near the top of the register. The days of the scores of 100+ are gone. Anything over 80% and it is a good score. Good luck. |

You have to pass an exam to be a postal employee? You wouldn't think it from the two tards we have working in ours. They rarely put the correct mail in the correct boxes. IF they even look at the mail, they will say "Hmm, 'John', I think his goes somewhere over here... Eh, this one will do." instead of looking at the PO number and placing it in the correct box. They aren't new there anymore so they certainly have no excuse. I just don't know where to complain. Since I have been reminded of their incompetency via this thread, I will look into it now. (And good luck on the exam!) |
It all hinges on your range score.... ![]()

It takes a certain kind of person to do that work, and I ain't one of them. The tests are a cattle call. They aren't hard, just require the ability to concentrate in that kind of setting. I took the test three times, progressively scoring higher each time primarily due to increased speed and knowing the game. Add vet's preference points and immaculate driving record and there you have it. My name was drawn out of the hat four or five times for vaious local offices / positions. I ended up delivering mail in the ghetto on foot for about a year. Worst fucking job I've ever had, hands down. ![]() |

Very similar to the ASVAB. It is not hard. Look around at most of the people who have passed it and been hired. No disrespect. Both my father and grandfather worked over 30 years for the USPS and never said a bad word about it. I have took the test and did not find it difficult. On the humor side: Long time ago in school i did something wrong enough that my parents needed to be called to come and get me. I will never forget the Dean tell his sec. to call my mother not my father because he was a "postal" worker Good luck! |
BTW: Are there any "grunteled postal workers"? How about "ungrunteled"? "engrunteled"? "regrunteled"? ![]()

Memorizing things is really my biggest worry. Since being on chemo I can't remember shit at all. I bought a study guide though and I'll work at it. Patty |
I asked her last night and she said they did not have one on the test she took. She told me that there were a bunch of different tests that they give out for different positions. She said her test was mostly timed questions and typing, since that is what she does for them. Hope this helps out. ETA: On the ethnic thing, put down you are a native american. If they ask you what tribe. Look at them, and say, tribe? I don't belong to no damn tribe, I was born here. |
Even though the USPS is a quasi-private corporation, many of the same hiring practices the rest of fed.gov uses are in effect there, too. For example, the agency I work for, sends ex-mil right to the head of the hiring line, ahead of better qualified civilians, according to my supervisors. They don't necessarily like it, but those are the rules. We have hired some eight-ball ex-mil goof-offs, I must admit.....

Hell you should have told her you are an albino black woman former Girl Scout... ![]() (affimative action run-amuck)..

Thank you for your support. I'm taking test 932. The job I'm applying for is electronic's tech. They need someone to fix their machines. I believe the ex mil should get special treatment. Anyone who makes the sacrifice even in non war times is more than welcome to step in front of me in line. Patty |
I'm searching for a local number now to look into this. There are some rural carriers around here - I can see me doing that. |
There were applications at the big post office in Pendleton [bigger town around here]. However I found out about it through a friend of a friend who works at this post office. The application sent me to a website.Click to website |

Thanks Patty - I'll check that out tomorrow. I ended up with computer probs today - 4 hrs of headache. EDIT: Looked at that site a bit and found this:
I never knew, and no one told me. I even called back in 98 when I got back to the States. |

I am a postal employee, in maintenance at a large mail processing facility. 1. No non-management postal employee starts at 54k. Only the highest level electronic technicians will ever see a 54k base salary. If you're applying for a mail processing, clerk, etc., position, your pay will be a bit lower than that to start. 2. The test is a joke. If you can tie your shoes, you should be able to pass the mail processing exams. 3. The maintenance tests are no joke. If you do not know anything about electricity, don't waste your time. 4. Be prepared to work shitty hours, overtime at Christmas, etc. I will work between 72 and 75 hours this week and next, and I had college finals last week and I still worked 50 hours. The pay is good on overtime, though. 5. On the shitty hours/days off, etc. Be prepared work shitty days. I have Mondays and Tuesdays off and I work from 3-1130 pm. It sucks to be 23 and work EVERY weekend and to never be off work until late at night but it pays my bills. 6. If you are hired, do NOT join any labor union no matter what they try to swindle you with. It is a scam. Overall, I would never suggest anyone work for the postal service unless they are a loser that cannot make it anywhere else. It really is a shitty job, even though the pay is decent and it does provide for me to go to school in the mornings and try to make something of my life. It's certainly a "career" with excellent benefits. Other than that, it's the shittiest job I've ever had. |
