Wait .... What's the premise?  The song was ruined by the cover song or made famous?

Black Magic Woman...Carlos Santana.

I would argue that Darius Rucker did not ruin Wagon Wheel, he just did it differently than the original band., who seem just fine with his version.

Cheryl Crow's cover of "Sweet Child O' Mine" sucks, as does Madonna's cover of "American Pie".

Johnny Cash took NIN's 'Hurt' to the point that its video was the soundtrack of the autobiography of his life.

I actually really really like JC's version of the song...though I must admit I do prefer NiN's, though I like Johnny MUCH more than NiN.

Oh, and another one..not really ruined by a "cover" per say, but the original was sooo much better.  It had soul.

Trent Reznor agrees with you. He said when he heard Johnny Cash's version that the song became Johnny's.

FFDP did a great cover and the video they did when they toured Iraq redefined that song for me.
And yes, I rocked to the original when I was in college.

Never knew Tainted Love was a remake. Really like the '80s version, but the original is actually really good! Great to dance to IMO!

Here's one that is better than the original:

Actually a cover of a cover, but still good! I meant this one:
