Most tables are expensive because of the fancy carvings, etc. Most of the times the rails are not even carved, but the base and legs are. Look for the type of finish you want, and what will last (ie: veneer, wood veneer, laminate, 100% wood). All tables vary in price simply because of the types of wood and the artistic detail.
You can get a cheap table at Sears that looks good.
Mine is a simple Oak with routered lines, similar looking to the Olhausen Gibraltar (one of the lower-cost Olhausen tables).
(The pool-table installed wanded to pay me $2700 for a 10yr old used table. Makes me wonder what it is worth - it was won on a game show and is a rare model.)
The "Oak Gibraltar" should be around $2k installed, last I checked. (it is veneered)
The Gibraltar is a garden oak laminate finish.
