Lets say you've just become a wealthy man, ether by winning the lottery, finding out you are the long lost beneficiary of some fortune, or you invent some marvelous gadget in a flash of genius, or sit down and write a best selling novel, with a half dozen more ready to be typed out, movies optioned already, etc, etc etc... enough money that money is no object.

Would you hire domestic staff to serve you at home?

Yes.  Much like how Iron Man has Pepper Potts.

for yard work yeah, but I can clean and cook myself.
Link Posted: 7/23/2010 8:41:56 AM EDT
I'm by no means rich but I already have a maid to come clean the house.  I would gladly give up cable TV, going out to dinner on weekends, etc before giving up my maid. TOTALLY WORTH IT!

All topless all the time at the mansion and bikini mommas on the yacht until we left port then all nude.

Yes. The property I would buy with my "richness" would be too big to maintain on my own.
Link Posted: 7/23/2010 8:45:39 AM EDT
I wouldn't consider myself rich, but we have a housekeeper.

She's awesome.
Link Posted: 7/23/2010 8:48:40 AM EDT
Only to care from my Mom so she'll let me out of the cellar
Link Posted: 7/23/2010 8:52:13 AM EDT
Hell yeah! I would hire all my buddies as butlers.
Link Posted: 7/23/2010 8:54:23 AM EDT
I doubt it. I find it unlikely that we (wife and I) would like in a house too big for us to clean, and my yard would be mostly untouched forest, anyway.
Link Posted: 7/23/2010 8:55:49 AM EDT
I suppose i mean more than an au pair or a maid service.

Like, a real service staff that lived on your property full time.

Link Posted: 7/23/2010 8:56:15 AM EDT
Yes.  Bodyguards for when I was out of the USA would be necessary.  I'd also need farm hands here and in the Philippines.  Servants?  Not so much.  I like my house to be the sole domain of my wife and I.
Link Posted: 7/23/2010 8:58:00 AM EDT
We've already talked about hiring a maid or cleaning company to come by once or twice a month once my wife is working again.
Link Posted: 7/23/2010 8:59:55 AM EDT
I sure would, it would be impossible to do everything I wanted by my self. I couldn't maintain my thousands of acres, helicopters, planes, tanks, duce and a half's, compound/mansion, and everything else if I was loaded. My employees would have the best jobs in the world though, I'd also need help playing with all those toys too and I figure who would be better to use them with than the people who were into those things enough to the point that I would want to hire them to take care of my stuff. But I'll be 30 in the fall and it's starting to look like there's a pretty good chance that will never happen, unless I win the lotto but I rarely invest in the redneck retirement plan.
Link Posted: 7/23/2010 9:00:42 AM EDT
Maybe my thoughts on this would change after having money for a while, but right now I can clean my own house and maintain my own yard.
If I was wealthy, I'd have an air-conditioned riding mower with all sorts of cutting and digging attachments and flaming bunnies painted on the side, & then I'd mow even more regularly.
I don't know what it takes to take care of a huge mansion, so I don't know if I could handle it without a housekeeper. The kids would still have to clean up their own stuff & I don't want anyone poking around my things (mixing up 9x19 and 9x18 or .45acp and .45Colt, not putting dies where they belong, not leaving pistols under the couch cushions where they belong)
Link Posted: 7/23/2010 9:04:04 AM EDT

Generally no; HOWEVER...... I would hire a foxy BIG titted redhead to fix me pancakes & bacon in the morning, then to run around the house braless and dust (I hate dusting).
Link Posted: 7/23/2010 9:04:58 AM EDT
A cook, a cleaner, and a driver fo sho

have you not seen the Playboy Mansion?

so, whats rich, how much, a 100k is rich to some where as 10 million would be chickenfeed to others...

If I were Bill Gates rich or Rush Limbaugh rich

would I need security?
would I need a live in hooker?
just a maid or maid, secretary, game keeper,,rich is a broad statement..

and if I were really rich,,think Thunder Ranch returns to TEXAS as a major resort theme

Link Posted: 7/23/2010 9:08:12 AM EDT
I'd probably pay to have a house keeper come in a couple times a week.
Link Posted: 7/23/2010 9:09:39 AM EDT
Yeah, why not?

I classify "The Rich" as being people worth $500,000,000 or and up, but thinking about it. Anything less is just "Well To Do".
Link Posted: 7/23/2010 9:12:29 AM EDT
We did before, wife didn't like it.

I like to mow and do housework, so no help needed .
Link Posted: 7/23/2010 9:14:59 AM EDT
Of course, time=money.

I'd only do stuff I enjoy, or don't trust to professionals.

Link Posted: 7/23/2010 9:17:56 AM EDT
Yep someone to help out my wife.

And for me a personal assistant, to hold all the spare mags :)
Link Posted: 7/23/2010 9:19:42 AM EDT
We're solidly middle class but I love our bi-weekly maid.  If I were "rich" then I would also have a full time nanny and a full time ranch hand.
Link Posted: 7/23/2010 9:19:55 AM EDT
No. I don't like people around my stuff. I don't own enough to constitute needed someone to clean.

I like that Iron Man idea. If I were a superhero, I might need some help. But I don't plan on being one any time soon.

I have female friends that need to supplement their $$ from their jobs, they'll come in for a couple hours and only charge $30-40. For that amount, I'm not dusting or mopping again. I do the day to day stuff though.
Link Posted: 7/23/2010 9:22:05 AM EDT
No... I like simple. Rich guy w/ a hired staff = drama & BS = no thanks.
Link Posted: 7/23/2010 9:22:13 AM EDT
Doubtful

Your classification is bizarre. 2% from bank CD's off of $20,000,000 would net you $400,000 per year. Before taxes, but you could easily beat 2%.  IMO $10,000,000 liquid is clearly "the rich."

I would hire a few private employees that are exactly like me.......no criminal records, like guns and hunting also for maintenance and house cleaning on a regular work schedule and not living there,no border,or ghetto trash would be allowed on the twelve foot fenced and 24 hour armed guards on the  property.
Any repair services called in would also have to have legal employees and speak unbroken english to be hired for any work performed...that is my plan when the millions show up,matter of fact anyplace I spend my money would have to fall under that criteria

The exact opposite of this.
Link Posted: 7/23/2010 9:31:27 AM EDT
Damn right I would. I already farm the landscaping out, and if I could afford to, I'd farm the housework out. No doubt about it.
Link Posted: 7/23/2010 9:43:30 AM EDT
Absolutely.  I would hire someone to cut the grass and maintain the property.  I would also hire a personal trainer, massage therapist, and physician.  I can cook and clean for myself just fine.
Link Posted: 7/23/2010 9:44:10 AM EDT
Yes. That way I can focus on less menial things.
Link Posted: 7/23/2010 9:46:49 AM EDT
I'd hire a maid.

Outta the fuckin' house that is.    Rimshot.

As a youngster I worked in the city in Philly. Eating lunch one day, the conversation turns to "if you hit the lottery for a million."

One brotha says, "man, first thing I'd do is get a divorce."

Guy says "shit, man, you'd have to give her half."

Reply- "Shit, I got a half million, what do I want her around for?"

As resident Python Master, I deem this reference to be worthy of recognition. I hereby award you two internets, two cans of spam, and this lifesize replica of Spiny Norman.

Does he have to keep it at Luton?
Link Posted: 7/23/2010 9:56:21 AM EDT
Yes, and I would treat my employees well.
Working for me would be a highly sought after job.
Link Posted: 7/23/2010 10:02:41 AM EDT
Id hire a friend for various reasons, but no strangers will be on my property or in my house

I classify "The Rich" as being people who have enough money to wield significant influence over technology, industry and/or politics. $10,000,000 isn't enough for that. Money is about power and in today's world you can't start throwing around your weight without at least $100,000,000.
Link Posted: 7/23/2010 10:44:55 AM EDT
at least to do the lawn.
