JACKSON, Miss. -- Jackson Police are investigating the death of a 3-year-old boy who was mauled to death by a pit bull.

The incident happened at 112 Maple Ridge shortly before 9 p.m Tuesday.

Police said prior to the deadly attack, the toddler wandered into the carport where the pit bull was chained up.

Officials said the toddler lived at 109 Maple Ridge Street and was reportedly playing with neighbor's children at the time of the incident.

Police said the dog was so dangerous that when police arrived at the scene an officer had to shoot the dog in self defense. The pit bull survived the shooting and was recovered by the Animal Control Unit.

This is not the first case of a dog mauling a child in recent history in Jackson.

In November a 7-year-old boy was mauled by a pit bull at a neighbor's house. The boy survived and had to get stitches.

A decision to euthanize the pit bull will be made once an investigation has been completed.

The owners of the dog in this new case have been questioned but no charges have been filed.

Sounds like the cop needs some shot placement training.

I say we just give all these dogs to Michael Vick. These dogs just want to kill, so he'll give them the arena they want.

FREE MICHAEL VICK!!!!

Who lets their toddler wonder around?

Somebody's kid wanders loose and gets eaten and you guys are blaming the dog?

WTF is up with that?

If the dog was wandering loose, yeah, but this is the parent's fault.

Raise yo kids,
Raise yo kids,
Raise yo muthafuckin kids...

And the dog was on a chain, why shoot it? Sure it charged him but damn, control yourself.

Shhhh, we're talking about the dog that was chained up.  It was his fault!

Oh those poor parents.  I'm sure with their level of smarts, the ol' babymaker will be up and running again in no time.

sounds to me you need to understand how much damage dogs can take. They are hard to take down with a 5.56 or a 7.62. They have a small brain pan and when you throw in the fact the thing is moving. The cop shot and the animal stopped, the action worked at stopping the dog.

Number one fault was the parents for not keeping track of their kid, no one should over look that fact.

Why on Earth are folks blaming the dog?

It makes about as much sense as blaming the kid.

The dog was confined to it's property. The child was not.

The parents fucked up.
