My second cousins best friend worked with a guy who's sisters ex boyfriend has an uncle who just bought a Colt 16" M4 upper to put on his Bushmaster lower. He was so proud he slept with it the first night. Then he started seeing the word "M4forgery" and some of the wind came out of his sails. Now he's not sure if he's cool or just another retard. Whaddaya think ? Seeing as the real deal is illegal where he lives how could he do any better ?

Its just a term for a AR-15 carbine so that people don't go "OMG YOU'VE GOT A REAL M4! DOES IT SHOOT FULL AUTO!!?!!!"

Nothing negative about it.

Just a term, nothing for a grown man to get excited about.

Grown man is the key phrase here. I think it may even be an oxymoron.

I remember something about that term having to do with a lawsuit about the "M4" name, and people calling a non-Colt an "M4gery" as a reaction to that.

Mine's a Bushmaster, not a Colt.  Mine's semi-auto, instead of full-auto.  Therefore, mine is an M4gery, and I still love it.

Colt does not own the M4 name like they do AR15 so why anyone would call a non-colt M4 a "M4forgery" is beyond me.

I have a Bushy M4gery made in 2002 with the Mini-Y comp. I can't even shoot it because it makes my ears bleed.

So get the mini Y-Comp removed. I did.

Everyone is close but nobody gave the full answer yet. (In my opinion)
It is semi auto as has been said but a real M$ also has the 14 1/2" barrel.  Us civillians have to have a 16" barrel for the most part.  Hence the Forgery part.
If it has a 16" barrel it is not an M4.  If it is semi-auto it is not an M4.

You're not in an AWB state so I would strongly recommend sending the upper to ADCO and replacing the Mini-Y comp with a flash hider.  They make my teeth rattle.  I have a Krinkov and AK's with '74 style brakes and they are nothing compared to the Y comp on an AR.

Trademark issues

Colt has held a US trademark on the word "M4"
Many manufacturers produce firearms that come very close in terms of
appearance to a military M4, sometimes colloquially referred to as an
"M4gery" ,a portmanteau
of "M4" and "forgery"). Colt has maintained that it retains sole rights
to the M4 name and design. Other manufacturers had long maintained that
Colt had been overstating their rights — "M4" has now become more of a
generic term for a shortened M16/AR-15. In April 2004, Colt filed a
lawsuit against Heckler & Koch and Bushmaster Firearms, claiming acts of trademark infringement, trade dress infringement, trademark dilution, false designation of origin, false advertising, patent infringement, unfair competition, and deceptive trade practices. Heckler & Koch later settled out of court, changing one product's name from "HK M4" to "HK416". However, on 8 December 2005, a District court judge in Maine granted a summary judgment
in favor of Bushmaster Firearms, dismissing all of Colt's claims except
for false advertising. On the latter claim, Colt could not recover
monetary damages. More importantly, the court ruled that "M4" was now a
generic name, and that Colt's trademark should be revoked.

Colt makes the M4 for the military, not FN.

FN supplies the M16-A2/3/4/......

Ok, how about a 6921?
M4 is the military classification AND Colt's name for variations of their AR15's.
That makes me wonder––is my frankengun "M4" type carbine an "AR15"?  It's not a Colt.[>:/]

This BS is confusing.  We need an new name for these guns.

Colt makes the M4, FN makes the M16s.
