| I am trying to organize my photos and I'm looking for Basic Photo Organization/Album software (prefer Freeware or Shareware). I don't need anything fancy, just something that I can leave notes or comments about the pictures. I'm scanning a few thousand slides, negatives and photos and I'm not looking for an online/upload solution, but something I can put the organized photos onto a CD or DVD for storage with information about scenes, names, locations, dates etc...before I forget that information. |

Start using IPTC metadata.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Press_Telecommunications_Council#Photo.2FImage_metadata When I manage my photos with Lightroom, I add notes to each 'project' libraries photos via IPTC metadata to each photo including things like location (where I took the photo), names (e.g. name of model or other subject). Then any other program or application I want to use to manage my photos that support reading IPTC will allow me to sort, query, etc the photos based on that metadata. |

Would Picasa fit the bill? Free from Google. I don't use the online features, just use it as an image browser and organizer. I'll have to give it a tryout, but that is basically what I'm looking for, as well as something I can put notes or captions about the photos. |
