My mom is getting this when she is trying to "extend canvas size":

Notice how part of the options are muted out?  I can't figure it out.

Help!

You're talking about the canvas ext. color? That is weird...what format is the pic in? Is it flattened? If not has she selected the background? Make sure she didn't accidentally delete the BG layer...

You can't select a Canvas Extension Color for a transparent background, it will extend as transparent.

She's probably cut something out and pasted it onto a transparent background.

It's a .jpg.  She has just opened the picture in CS2, no layers.  Nothing has been cut & pasted.

I opened the same exact pic in my CS3, no problems.

That's the only thing I know of that restricts the Canvas Size tool.

When I perform a new Canvas Size in Photoshop CS via the Image menu command, the 'Canvas Extension Color' is grayed out. Why is this?

The Canvas Extension Color option requires a Background layer. To enable this do the following:

A. Create a new layer anywhere within the stacking order of the layers palette.
B. Then go to the 'Layer/New/Background From Layer' menu command.

When you save as a jpg a project that has a transparent background you end up with white where it was transparent.

example

I bet if she opens the exact file you just did that it will work.

The size of the current image is shown at the top.  10"W x 11.611"H.  The options are grayed because the size she is trying to change the canvas to (0.2"W x 0.2"H) is smaller than the original image.  She has to increase its size to use the extension color option.

If she is trying to grow the canvas size, she needs to add the amount she is trying to expand it to the current size.  In other words, her canvas should be 10.2"W by 11.811"H.  Her options should be available if she does this.

Good catch, this is the correct answer. She would need to check the "relative" box to proceed as she was trying to.

I had her check it.  It doesn't make any difference.

HOWEVER, she was playing with "curves" on the original picture (not an adjustment layer).  She re-opened the original pic, did not do anything in cuves and was able to extend the canvas (using curves afterward).

Why is this?

I've been messing with my CS2, I can't get it to do that.  I'm stumped.
