I was talking with a girlfriend today about the books we, as a society, have in our homes and it eventually got to my huge library.

Right now, about the only order this collection has are in shelves assembled to certain sizes to maximize vertical space for certain kinds of books and maybe some shelves dedicated, here and there, to certain subjects.

But when I build that section of the ranch, maybe what I need to do is have a proper library cataloging system in place so it is more useable.Dewey? Congress?

Further, maybe when I eventually start moving out there and am boxing books up, maybe I ought to start cataloging then, both from the aspect of once the library is built, reducing the work load from box to space on the shelf.........................and in the interim before the library is built, being able to find the box with the book.

You are over thinking it.  Just put them together by subject, alphabetical by author within that section.

I've had to shuffle mine a couple of times since I last organized them.  They are kind of in subject order - sci fi vs military vs etc  The good ones I know I will read again I make sure I know which shelf they are in.  Kind of need to play librarian again and re-do everything, but its not real high on my list of priorities

There's an online library service to help catalog your books.  You have to pay though.

I would just use the Lib. of Congress #.  It may be found inside or even on line.

BTW, I have one room as a dedicated library. Three bookcases of naval history/ships, six six-shelf bookcases of Civil War books, one with aviation, one on armor (including the Hunnicutt series on AFVs and Spielberger series on German AFVs), one on Colonial America, two on British military history, etc.

I just group them together by subject. Seeing as how I have been searching for the last two months to find my copy of Hatcher's Notebook, maybe my advice on organization isn't the best.

Probably.

Generally, alphabetical does work. Where it messes up is when one item has two or more entries to it. Running into that problem with my burned DVD's. Is one that has episodes of ER and Judging Amy on it listed under E or J? In those situations, I think the only answer is to assign them to some kind of numbering system.

But could that complexity happen with books? Author wise, no, but maybe subject wise if the book covers different subjects and the library is especially big. Then it might be necessary to code them, somehow.

Shelving is another thing, looking down the way. Right now, I use Space Savers steel galvanized, screw them together, shelves. Order about 10 sets every few months.....which makes about 6 units. Ie, one set will make a unit of 5, waste that space, while stripping shelves from other sets can be more economical on space.

Of course, I am always seeing on Craigs list free shelves like

Oh, decisions, decisions. Go for the buy and build them to what you need, even able to bolt them to the wall? Go for the free and make do?

The knowledge gained from a computer is a - it, uh, it has no-no texture, no-no context. It's-it's there and then it's gone. And I think I've found that book, that topic where there's a question to where it belongs.

Bought a 90's recycling text book at 1/2 Price, for $2, the other day and am now skipping through it. Most of it appears to be geared more to how to do a recycling program but it has interesting points here and there.

Do I put it in the section with my books on water pollution and aquatic toxicology?

Or next to the Anarchist Cookbook?

Put it beside the Bible and Koran.

Both are books filled with Recycled stories from Ancient Cultures.
