It's very embarrassing to lose your engine in the pattern and NOT make the field.  Plan your pattern accordingly.

the high approach angle is fine for very light aircraft like a 150 or a cub...but not so great as you progress into heavier aircraft.

a 182 is heavier enough that if you try what is being shown here, and dont flare just perfectly, you are going to hit the runway pretty hard and bend the firewall. it is a very common problem with 182s.

that's why the big boys have stabilized approaches where they FLY the plane onto the runway, only cutting power once they are in ground effect.

Stabilized approaches have their place.  Single-engine, VFR, general aviation ain't one of those places.  Flying a tight pattern doesn't mean you have to see all white on final. THAT steep of a final is also poor technique.

Anybody notice that he got more stripes as the video progressed?

valheru, i disagree.

a tight pattern means either a high descent rate, or a high airspeed. either of these is not ideal.

there's no reason to fly downwind legs a mile past the end of the runway, but i am not willing to fly super-tight patterns in my 182 just to make some cub jockey happy.

on final i like flaps, power, and trim set for a nice stable 450-500FPM descent at 70 kts.

i think the "what if the engine quits on downwind" argument is lame. what if it quits 15 minutes before you are in the pattern? engine failure is not a common safety issue. stalling on base to final, and hard landings, are big safety issues.

if my engine quits on downwind, i will have no trouble making the runway. and i wont give a crap about the condition of my plane either. it's insured.
