| Anyone here besides bama- do this? I'm thinking that if I want to get into the field that I would like to do this. I want to get into leo very bad, but in my neck of the woods they make 30 k a year, while a social worker makes 60-80 k a year. I think a mostly full, I think 4 tens, of social worker stuff and part time leo would be a pretty nice job? What say arfcom, bos? |

Lots of part-time stuff actually means reserve duty. I was a reserve police officer in California and working at full-time job as a manager for 65k a year. Then I decided I enjoyed the police stuff so much that I left my job to get into law enforcement full time.
We had a motto that I can't remember who we borrowed it from: "Most people wouldn't do it for a Million Bucks!! Police Officers do it for a whole lot less. Reserves do it for FREE!!!" We even had it put on our reserve t-shirts. It was a lot of fun. You might check into that, most of the part-time guys that I know who actually get paid, are guys who did a long time with their department and then basically retired and just do the odd shift here and there. |

I'm not sure about PD, but most of the FD's in my county rely on part timers for adequite staffing. We get paid by the hour, and a lot of guys work at multiple departments to make a living until they can find a full time gig. I work a 12 hr shift every third night and go to school full time, so it works out great for me. Other part timers work a 12hr shift every third day, or a 24hr shift every 6th.
I am sure that there are PD's out there that operate similarly, I guess you should just call around to departments in your area and see what they offer. Come to think of it one of the full time firefighters I work with is also a part time officer for a nearby department, so I know they are out there. Check around with the smaller cities and villages in your area, as they are the ones most likely to utilize part time staffing. |
