TORRANCE, Calif. (CBS) A reserve officer with the Redondo Beach Police Department pleaded not guilty Friday to a dozen misdemeanor charges, including possession of child pornography, dissuading a witness and destroying evidence.
Randy Vincent Jones, 49, was held on $215,500 bail pending a bail review next Thursday, said Jane Robison of the District Attorney's Office.
Jones is charged with 10 counts of possession of child pornography and one count each of destroying evidence and dissuading a witness from prosecuting a crime, according to Robison.
The reserve officer was arrested on Wednesday, said Redondo Beach police Sgt. Phil Keenan.
"The public is morally outraged by this," the sergeant told KCAL9. "But we are 10 times more morally outraged by this when one of our own is involved in something like this. When something like this happens, it brings dishonor on the whole department -- and a sense of betrayal."
Keenan said it is the first arrest of a reserve officer in the program's 30-year history.
"We had a friend of his tell us that he was involved in certain things and that this person had found evidence of what we believe was possession of child pornography," Keenan said.
Jones, a volunteer reserve officer since 1998, was suspended pending the outcome of the case, Keenan said.
Officers served a warrant on Jones' residence and seized a number of commercially produced child pornography videotapes, Keenan said.
Authorities also seized a number of videos allegedly produced by Jones showing him engaging in sexual acts with women, and police are investigating whether the women were aware they were being taped, Keenan said.
It is a crime to make such videos without the knowledge of all participants, Keenan said. Possible victims were urged to call police at (310) 379-2477. CNS-05-7-2004 16:51
