Is there a significant loss in muzzle velocity and performance with the shorter barrel or is the more compact and slightly lighter carbine worth it?

From what I understand the 16" is designed a hair differently than the 18". The front sight is different IIRC. No big deal really, just like 2" extra. I think you end up paying a bit more for the shorty also.
