If I text message you, do not call me.
I am text messaging you, not calling you, for a reason.
I may be doing something that precludes me from giving my full attention and focus to a phone call.
I may need an answer to a question, but I have to be discrete about it, which is why I texted you.
I could also be trying to find plans for the evening with multiple people, and I do not want to be forced into a commitment.
Either I do not want to commit to a phone call or I cannot talk on the phone currently.
So please, please if someone text messages you "whats up?" DON'T CALL THEM BACK.

I have mixed feeling about this... a simple text gets a simple text in response. But "what's up" either deserves to be ignored or a call. Maybe nothing is up in which case it's likely to be an inane waste of time to carry on a text communique.

On the other hand, I'm not going to text until my hands shrivel up like claws from arthritis to tell you the goings on for the days or my plans or to have a complicated discussion or agument. If you wanna spring for a GOOD phone with a qwerty keyboard for me, then perhaps we could go that route. I am not going to carry on any conversation by text on my RAZR but will respond to simple interrogatories with a brief text when appropriate.

I gotcha.
Here is how I imagined this texting conversation would go down.

Me - how was your weekend?
Her - g00d urs?
Me - pretty decent. when do you get off work?
Her - lk 230. y?
Me - you want to meet at the Grog for lunch?
Her - sre we cn grb sum f00d.
Me - alright, see you then.
Her - ttyl ltrz

How about
"wanna get lunch at Grog after work?"

Just a thought.

I don't accept text messaging as a valid means of communication.  If someone text messages me, they're either going to get a call or, more likely, get ignored.
