Well, if they take advantage of the new moon and the cooler weather, then I'd have to say either the beginning or the end of January, 2003.

Laylat Al-Baraa

Laylat Al-Baraa has been translated as "the night of repentence." (Laylat means night). It is the night when forgiveness is granted to those who repent. Muslims believe it is a night when God is setting the coming year's course for each person. It is therefore a time when one asks for God's blessings as well as for any specific request.[/b]

Not.

I think Bush has missed the window of opportunity. If an attack and subsequent invasion were to start now, then Iraq would still be under occupation 18 months from now, during the reelection campaign. Too ugly. I think that there may be some continuing, perhaps escalating, spot attacks on "targets of opportunity" but that we will not see an invasion or occupation.

The problem with Iraq is what to do on the third day. Day 1: Bomb the livin' shit out of the place. Day 2: Have a big parade. Day 3: ?

On Day 3, (figuratively speaking, of course) we get to take part in that most dreaded of military charges: Nation Building. We've not seen a good track record in that regard.

However, if my friends across the state line in Missouri start reporting the tell-tale hushing up around the greater Knob Noster metro-plex, followed by a flurry of B-2 departures, I will happily state that I was wrong.

When does Ramadan end?

After Christmas, if at all.  I think a lot of the rhetoric was sabre-rattling to scare Saddam.  Taking Baghdad will not be a cakewalk.  But then again, the oil companies are already figuring out how to divvy up the spoils, so many this thing is a "GO."  It must be fun for your military types on the board to know you're going into harm's way so that a bunch of rich people can get a little bit richer.  Too bad they won't cut you in for a piece of the action.

We did this once before, I'd be interested in pulling up that topic, but I don't have access to the search button.  [>(]

The month of Ramadan ends one lunar cycle after it began, which will be about 04 December this year. Then the fun begins. I've done quite a bit of work in Egypt and Jordan, and have worked with a lot of Muslims. I hate trying to get anything done during Ramadan. It wouldn't be so bad if it were just a month, but they typically start slowing down about 10 days before the start of Ramadan. The, after the Eid, they usually take about 2 weeks to get back up to what speed they ever had. At least when Ramadan is during winter thing move along a bit during the month. When Ramadan comes during the summer, everything stops dead.

It is preferable to conquer them when the ground is frozen.  Unlike many backward 14th century raghead countries, there are water obstacles to be breached, unless entering from the west (but there are chokepoints among the lakes).  Do the math/IPB for crying out loud.

Thanks DzlBenz.
I think Bush will wait for Ramadan to end before invading Iraq.

On Christmas Eve.

We can drop a few "presents" down thier chimneys.

Just picture it...A bunch of bombers with names painted on the sides...Rudolph, Donner, Blitzen etc.

Most likely at the exact same time the last one did.

Unlike in Russia, Winter is the best time for fighting in Iraq. The idea will be to have the major resistance put down by the time it gets too hot.

I was listening to Mike Reagan this evening and David Hackworth called the show. Here is what he had to say.

He has been talking to generals in the region at the Rank of 2nd star, Major Generals. They have been authorized that in the event of the USE of chemical or biological weapons by Iraq , they have the Nuclear option at their disposal. In other words they have been authorized to use nukes if IRAQ resorts to WMD attacks.

2nd he said that he and his associates have speculated that Iraq might already have nuclear capability.

Also Mike Reagan pointed out that one of the inspectors for the UN had hidden information from the UN that weapons inspectors had found in the past that IRAQ is in possetion of 7 vials Anthrax. Which to my way of thinking isn't a big deal, I already figured they had a hell of a lot more then this.
