So, we responded to a report of a one-vehicle 10-50 the other night and arrived on scene to find one full size pickup in a parking area which had struck another pickup that was stationary and unoccupied at the time of the low-speed collision.  One adult male was found unconscious behind the wheel with a bottle of whiskey resting neatly on the armrest of the driver's door.

The driver was responsive to painful stimuli and not suffering from any obvious injuries despite the lack of a seatbelt.  No airbag deployment and the damage to the vehicles was very minor.  Spinal "immobilization" protocol was carried out and the driver was transported to the nearest hospital.  Pupils equal and reactive, PMS x4, vitals within normal limits, yadda yadda yadda.

Tox screen in the ER comes back.  BAC was nearly 0.500 (0.486 if I recall correctly)!
Blood was drawn approximately 15mins after arriving at the ER.

I had guessed 0.360 so at least I was closer than the trooper's estimate.

TX limit is 0.080 and my understanding is that anything over 0.400 is considered toxic.

Anyone seen higher?

.47 is my highest. He was driving and we actually did the FSTs. He was a drunk and his girl said he did nothing but drink alcohol.

His defense was that he should be dead. Brought in some nice docs to prove it.

.32 was my highest I've seen, only as a bail violation though.

.24 was my highest drunk driving level. 25-year-old girl who I pulled over for speeding. When I asked her how much alcohol she has drank this evening, she said "2 beers". I asked her if that included the two open and frosty cans of bud light sitting in the center console next to her

This was the highest BAC I've seen so far.  It really suprised me that he was as stable as he was.  Of course he later admitted to being a HEAVY drinker.  I doubt his BAC ever drops to 0.00.

He was behind the wheel and the keys were still in the ignition.  The Trooper asked my partner and I whether we shut off the vehicle or not.  We did not, but the owner of the other vehicle is the one who called it in.

Does it make a difference whether or not the motor was still running?

Would a person face a different charge if so or is this just something that needs to go in the Trooper's report?

.44 was the worst I ever saw when I was working on an ALS Ambulance. I got to see the majority of that guys skull that night too. He lived. Unfortunately.

I never get to see the results. The police call us we get out of bed and draw blood then go back to sleep. The only time I got to have someone blow for me was a 16 year old chick (pretty hot too, I had just got out of HS) was when I was working at the ED. She had stolen her parents car and gotten into a chase. She blew a .00

The highest I ever had was a 0.43.  He was one of our chronics who has to have a liver the size of a basketball.

My highest was a .38, and that was over an hour after the stop.  I was amazed that he was able to stand on his own.  Not sure if he was on the up swing or down.  Refused SFSTs, but gave blood.  Must have made for one hell of a hangover, and glad I was there to make sure a death, injury or damage wasn't involved.

Highest I've seen was .52––-the guy was walking and talking, just doing it very precisely and somewhat slowly.

Our service is hospital based now which usually sucks, but since we are often asked to help out w/ patients, we often get to see the results as well.

This guy was by far the most intoxicated I have run on thus far.  People out here don't have anything to do so they seem to drink instead.

On a related note about DUI's, let me just say this.  It has been confirmed that there are certain types of poles that strippers should dance around.  Light poles are not one of them.  Had a 28 year old stripper wrapped her car around a light pole and ran home thinking no one would notice...  I turned the PBT off after it hit .16, even though I'm sure she'd have hit .2 easy.

Sorry about the hijack, I just could not stop laughing about that this morning.

Highest I have seen was .43.  Dude did great on all FST's except HGN.  Was a true alcoholic.  Even he was suprised with his BA as he had not had anything to drink in about 4 hours before our encounter.  On his most recent DUI, he had blown a .48.

I was told years ago during Intoximeter training that the highest BA ever tested in my state was a .72.  It was a blood test from a fatal wreck.  Don't know any other details than that.  Don't know if dude died from alcohol or injuries.  I would say that if the injuries didn't get him, he would have not survived with that BA.

0.489 = ICU

Funny how some people cant keep from straddling the lines at .08
Other chronic alcoholics will seemingly drive just fine at .3

The highest I've arrested was .533 on a blood draw approximately two hours after the accident he caused. He ended up getting 8 to 12 years for it. It was about his 5th DUI, in addition to having several Reckless Driving and Leaving The Scene convictions. Only 27 years old.

Nope, just a hick that really took to heart the lessons he learned growing up thinking getting drunk was cool.
