I'm not a Bluray adopter yet. I know it won the format war, but I'm not buying a new DVD/Bluray player until either A) I absolutely have to, or B) I can find a stand-alone unit that is as good as a PS3.
Back in June, I bought an Oppo DV981HD from a board member. This thing arrived in pristine condition, with all accessories (even original packaging). And out of the box it was an awesome player. Upconverting was far better than my previous player. Fast forward to today, when it took a dump. The display started flashing wildly, and it wouldn't power on. The power button (instead of being either red or blue) was a pulsing purple color. This thing was dead. So after not finding anything online about the issue, I thought I'd have to spring for a Bluray player. On a whim, I called Oppo up, and told them about it. Even though this player arrived in pristine condition, the fact is it was still a used player. I had no original receipt, and the unit was certainly out of warranty. It was just broken. So what did Oppo tell me? Send it back. We'll even pay for shipping both ways, and the repair will be free of charge. You'll receive a shipping label via email in the next few hours (it arrived in about 10 minutes) and we'll take care of everything for you. Just felt like sharing a good CS experience with an electronics manufacturer. |

Oppo customer service is one of the best out there. I bought one of their upscaling DVD players when it first came out. Never had any problems with it and it delivered a better picture than my high end Sony. Many Home Theater reviewers hailed it as one of the best DVD players that ever came out and was even better than the units that costs 10 times as much. The only gripe the reviewers had was that the remote control had tiny buttons and was not backlighted. So what did they do? They redesigned the remote on the newer units to address these admittedly minor shortcomings. After a few months, I was surprised to see the new redesigned Oppo remote in my mailbox. They sent me one for free! How many electronics manufacturers you know have done anything like that for an item that originally sold for less than $200?
I'm patiently waiting for their Blu-Ray player. |
