| When you change oil in any car or truck why dont any of the manufacturers make it where you use exactly 4 or 5 or 6 qts instead of 4.3 or 5.3 qts per oil and filter change. They could make it so much easier for anybody that changes oil. |

I would totally agree.. Also why would you design an engine and put the oil filter in an odd postion (ie on top of the engine so it drains all over it)..
I also dont know why on rear/front differentials they say fill it 3/4" below the fill hole.. just move the hole down 3/4" and let me fill it until it comes out of the hole.. Why not put drain plugs on transmissions as well, on my truck you have to drop the pan to change the fluid (i installed a B&M drain plug in mine).. Brian edited for spelling |
| Nearly every domestic manufacturer uses either round numbers or halves, and i think the issue with the imports is that they are designed with the metric system so the numbers may be more round if you convert them to liters. My question is why they place the filters in some of they places they do, but that is a different discussion. |

Never had a car that didn't take either 4 or 5 quarts exact. My 'beef' is this: Why the HELL do they make it such a pain in the ass to get to stuff... For example, the gas tank on a 3rd/4th gen Firebird... Oil pans/pumps (multiple makes/models) why the hell can't you get to the damn thing without nearly pulling the damn engine out - and once you get the damn pan partly-off, you have to dis-assemble the pump blind, to get the pump & pan out... SPARK PLUGS (V-8 F-body especially)... Never had anything with a 'funky' oil filter spot... And WTF is wrong with putting the damn fuel pump on the damn frame-rail, rather than in the damn gas tank? |

With regards to the fuel pump, noise and vibration issues. External pumps are noisy; in-tank pumps slightly less so. |

Getting exactly 4.3 quarts or something awkward isn't really a big issue.
Get enough in there without going much at all under or grossly over and you'll be fine. I haven't had an oil spec that wasn't at .5 or 1 quarts, but that is a little goofy if that is the case. |
| The pumps are also in the tank so the fuel can cool the pump, or that is what I have been told. I also believe they design the vehicles to increase the difficultly of some repairs so the drivers are more likely to return to the dealer for service then attemp it themselves. I can't believe how many people use the dealer as their mechanic! |
