Ohio Police Say 2 Highway Shootings Are Related

At least 2 of 10 recent shootings on or near Interstate 270 near Columbus, Ohio, are related, law enforcement officials said yesterday.

One of the attacks, that of Gail Knisley, 62, who was shot on Tuesday morning as she rode in a friend's car, was fatal. None of the other shootings resulted in injuries.

Steve Martin, chief deputy of the Franklin County Sheriff's Department, said in a statement yesterday, "Based on ballistic results, we are able to say that at least one other reported case has been positively linked to Mrs. Knisley's death, and investigators cannot eliminate the possibility that several other of the reported cases are related as well."

Officials did not give details of the related shooting and did not specify the type of weapon used.

The first shooting was reported in May, and many of the others took place in the last several weeks.

Law enforcement officials said they did not realize that the shootings could be related because drivers were reporting incidents to a variety of state and local offices leaving them with seemingly unrelated clues and information.

When Mrs. Knisley was killed, local, state and federal authorities joined together and began looking at the shootings in various jurisdictions.

Rick Zwayer, spokesman for the State Highway Patrol, said his office handled one incident that could be linked to this recent spate of shootings, involving a driver who was shot at while heading south on Route 23 near the intersection of Interstate 270. Unaware of what happened at first, the driver pulled to the side of the road and found bullet fragments under the vehicle hood. The incident occurred on Nov. 21 but was not reported until four days later, the day Mrs. Knisley was killed.

The stretch where the shootings took place is "a mixed area of rural Interstate with some wooded areas, some industrial areas and some suburban, residential areas," Sergeant Zwayer said.

The suspect or suspects are probably familiar with the highway, law enforcement officials said, meaning they might live or work there. Mrs. Knisley was headed to a doctor's appointment when she was killed.

Mrs. Knisley planned to spend the weekend with her grandchildren so her son, Brent, and his wife, Missi, could spend a quiet anniversary weekend together.

When Missi's parents expressed anxiety about a planned trip to the Washington area last year as the sniper story was unfolding, Mrs. Knisley supported their decision to postpone the trip.

"She said, `I don't think I'd want to go either,' " Missi Knisley said, recalling her mother-in-law's words. "Who would have thought?"
