Best if its less than three hours from Downtown LA. Just want to test my new 4x4 out. So I guess i'm looking for a beginners trail. It would be heaven if it leads to a shooting area.
You could go out to Barstow (outlet center drive exit, turn right until you see the sign for the offroad area). There's a large area there where they run races and stuff. Varied terrain, not too difficult in most areas.
Also, one exit to the south on the 15 is Hodge Road. If you go west on Hodge there is a large shooting area there.
Have fun. . .
We used the powerlines! You see and find some strange stuff on those powerlines!
Is it an open shooting area or is it restricted to handgun or shotgun only.
Up the 5 freeway to Gorman there is a pretty big OHV area, but no shooting area. I have also been to a little place called Texas Canyon a little north of Saugus of the 14 and Via Princessa it's up Sierra Hwy into the Angeles Forest Area. Lots of hilly trails, but again no shooting, but it is a very beginner area, I even ran my 2wd S10 around there a few years back.
Hungy Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area
El Mirage is a pretty cool place to go too.
San Gabriel Canyon OHV
LITTLEROCK OHV AREA
Here is a list of all the "legal" off road areas in SoCal:
It's actually private land, although I've never seen any signs/fences posted there. We have shot pretty much everything you can think of with the exception of full auto out there (can't get a NFA in CA).
If I remember correctly, it's called the Johnson Valley Off Road Area (or maybe that's in Lucerne Valley). Either way, it definitely is a fun area to run in. You have small mountains, dry lakes, sand washes and TONS of dirt roads to play on. Also, it's only ten mintes from the Outlet Shopping Areas. . . :-)
Perhaps I have mis-lead you that I have a ATV.......What I have .. don't laugh is a SUV but its a 4x4.
The last place my buddies and I shot at was near there I think ..we exited Bear Mountain Rd. is that near Hodge Rd.?
Perhaps some of us can get together in May.
Alot of parts to hodge road are resticted to shotgun only.Try going to calico off ghosttown road you can definitely test the 4 wheel drive and shoot there i go there alot during the winter months. as far as texas canyon i havent been there in years we use to go there to ride and you use to be able to shoot there but not anymore.check on the blm site and you can get a nap of the shotgun only areas.
