I bought some LED bulbs just to see how they would do in front porch lights.  The output is terrible compared to incandescent and CFL.  That is all.

I've not tried the LED "porch type" lights.

But I have replaced several of my overhead indoor ceiling lights with CFL and IMO they also suck!
I pulled all the CFL's out and put the incandescents back in.
The CFL's claim that said they were equal to a 60 watt incandescent was total BS!

When I turn the switch I want light and lots of it!
While I have replaced all of my flashlight bulbs with LED with great success, the home CFL/LED thing at least in my house is a bust!

I can live with CFL's inside...they get bright enough after a few seconds.  Even outside they do okay.  But the LED's just don't put out enough light...they're going to be returned tomorrow.

Great for auto brake/turn signals/interior.  And for Christmas lighting.

The LED lights are slowly getting better with each progressive generation. My experience with the CFL's is I bought six of them for the bsmt/garage areas just to try out out, of the six GE CFL's (made in the PRC of course) they had a 50% failure rate right out of the box: IE 3 were DOA. I sent GE an e-mail about it and they sent me 3 new ones but I dont think they are much better than incandesants, the light quality sucks, plus the danger of the mercury vapor should they break. The LED bulbs when they mature will use much less energy than the CFL and last longer as well as have a light quality IMHO closer to an incandesant bulb. In the meantime I will stock up on some incandesants the next time I am at sams club.

I just did the same thing, I wasn't impressed by the LED light. I put it on the back deck for now.

3w for the amount of light it puts out is pretty good but I don't like the temperature. They are getting better, I've seen some of the really expensive ones and they are great, tech is about 3 years out for us normal folk.

Are CFLs the "swirly" ones, like you can buy in the 8-packs at Sam's?

If so, I'm converting my incandescent bulbs to these, one at a time.

Because off the mercury, is there any disposal protocol to be followed?

Didn't know they made LED lights of this type; lovin' 'em in flashlights, though.

Link to LED bulbs?  I'm curious.

Oh yeah, CFL bulbs suck ass.  Having them light your house is like staring at a CRT monitor @60Hz all day long.

Thanks for that.

Question:

In apps where CFLs are contraindicated, would LEDs be a good replacement?

(i.e. in lights that are do not stay "on" for long amounts of time and/or go through fast "on/off" cycles; for example, refrigerator lights and bathroom lights)

If it physically fits use the 23W bulb.  They are as bright as a regular 100W bulb.  Also the new bulbs do need to warm up for a minute for maximum light output.  They need a little longer if it is very cold outside.

Edit:  Nevermind, I just noticed you posted about LED lights.  I was talking CFL.
