They sure stick.

My youngest two are 12 months apart. He was a big man of 12 months old when "Marin" was born. He called named her aLA then. (god knows where that came from) That morphed into Lala in the next few months (and now years.) Those two have their own language. He is coCO, she is Lala. She is 100% known by all teachers, friends and coaches as Lala.

She is 4 years old, and actually asked me the other night, when meeting people on a formal situation..."pssst!!! Um, whats my real name again?"

Thoughts? And do you have a nickname that stuck....?

Now that is funny.  Don't think it is anything to worry about but I ain't no expert.

Yes I have lots of nicknames that have stuck.  The only one I will repeat on arfcom is my exwifes––-Evil Bastard.

I almost wondered after the fact if he came up with that because of the teletubbies. Did I dress her in yellow one day...?

My sister and I are a year and half apart (she's older).  When I was learning to talk, I had some difficulty pronouncing her name.   The only thing I could muster was "Moose."

I still call her Moose today.

My oldest Daughter is Arielle...

When right before delivery we had chosen her name (lioness of God).

We took a neice to the movies.. only thing playing that wasn't R rated was "The Little Mermaid"...

about a minute into the move the main characters name was spoken...

We looked over at each other in a panic saying "Holy Hell - People will think we named our kid after a Disney character!!!"

Lala is younger then Corey, but she is a big girl....She keeps him on his toes. GONE are the days of him taking everything she touched as his own, including lint off the floor...She fights back now.

My sister has called me "Fat-D" (name is Dustin) for as long as I can remember.  Though I'm not nearly as fat as I was even just a year ago, she still calls me by that name.

An old female friend of mine used to call me "stick butt."  No clue where that came from, but "–––––– butt" is what she calls everyone.

I call another female friend "bing."  Came from a joke of sorts when we were freshmen.  It's stuck and she knows something is wrong if I call her by her actual name, ha.

Oh!  Remembered another one.  I used to work summers in college at a Mustang/Camaro performance shop.  During the week I basically didn't shave because I was dirty all the time.  I also didn't cut my hair for months.  And I wore Birkenstocks.  Also, I don't drink, smoke, or cuss.  My nickname?  Jesus.  Yeah.

Arielle is a beautiful name. I think Marin is too....

How is it that I have a 4 year old that is more commonly known as Lala?

Disney has to get their names from somewhere. Tell your little one that they names the character after her.

I've never had a nickname that lasted more than a month.

Knew a guy at school called Roland. His nickname was Rancid, as in Rancid Roll.

Never quite figured that one out but that's what it was.

My little league baseball coach would always greet me with a hearty "BIG B". My team mates emulated this all through my baseball years. I only hear it from those old school friends when I see them.

My latest one is Crash, due to an accident a few months ago in which I ran over my hand and dislocated my shoulder.

The one i've had the longest is Crazy F, which dates to my junior year in high school.

My daughter's nickname is Bean. When she was born I thought her head looked like a bean, and it just stuck. I'm sure I'll be calling her Bean well into high school.

And I'm sure I've been called some nasty ones lately, but I really don't give a hoot.

Pretty much. It can get confusing though, because my buddy's dog's name is bean, and my other buddy's girlfriends nickname is Beena. Poor kid doesn't know who's being called half the time. Sarah Bean works better sometimes.

My last name is Stoner. I work in a career field where everybody goes by their last name and I get so used to responding to "Stoner" that when people call me by my first name I don't even acknowledge it. One day, I was talking with a co-worker and they asked me what my first name was and I actually paused for a minute and had to think about it.

Nickname is my username, minus the 7 (some other ass who never posts has "Frost." I hope he chokes on it).

Comes from, among other things, my attitude. With the exception of when Obama and Democrats come up, I would give Vulcan stoics a run for their money.

My youngest daughter is called flubber because she just bounces off everything without getting hurt. My sisters girls are nicknamed poopers and boogers. I asked them if that was what they wanted when they were little.
A cousin is called sasquatch because she is 6ft tall and has at least size 13 mens feet.

I like Lala.  I'd go with that

The teachers in the elementary school I work in are pretty good about nicknames.  Sounds like she knows the difference between her real name and nickname though, so I predict she'll work it out just fine.

In certain circles I've wound up as Sparky.  We're not getting into details

Sparky??? Oh, I want details!

I just never thought a nickname would be this consuming before. My older kids have gone through brief name changes, most from sports teams, or funny and in the moment family related stuff. This one is really sticking in a huge way.

Lala.... Its just not a name I would have chosen for her. She seems happy with it though, regardless of how much 2 grandmothers disapprove. They both wonder why she won't look at them when they call her Marin.

It's funny how nicknames can morph over time. aLa––>Lala.

I had a friend as a kid named Ernie. When we went to his house to call him out to play we'd say "Oh Ernie!"

So we shortened that and started calling him "Wernie" That changed to "Werner", and then to "Wern".

As he got older, he got fatter, so we called him "Big Wern", and then "B.W." Finally, it became "B-Dubbs".

Strange. From Ernie to B-Dubbs.

That happened between the ages of 4 and 25.

ETA: Nicknames are usually a sign of affection.
