Hello there!  I'm still pretty new to Cigars and new to the forum.  I recently picked up smoking cigars last year.  I've found there is nothing like a good glass of scotch and a nice stogie.  I've got a little humidor set up and so far I really enjoy Rockey Patel 1990-92 and Padron 1964 with one 1926. hose
Where are you guys buying online?

Are the punch type cutters any good?  I have a cheap guillotine and would like to upgrade.

Do you recommend a digital hygrometer?  I just have a cheap humidor right now with an analog one.

Any other tips would be welcome.

Thanks again for all the great info so far.

I think you're going to be hard pressed to beat or duplicate the Padron 1964 or 1926, unless you have a line on Cubans.  Padron is all I smoke anymore.

I have a good cigar shop locally so I have never needed to order on line.  If you have one near you get to know them, they may even special order hard to get items for you.

Analog hydrometers have worked just fine for me for my 25 years of cigar enjoyment.

Get a good guillotine cutter.  I've tried the slit and punch styles but the guillotine is a classic cut.

The "Torch" is the best cigar lighter I have ever used.  You may want to consider one for yourself.

Good luck and good smoking.

LOL, you've skipped right to the Padrons.   Hope you have deep pockets because you are going to forever compare all other cigars to those PAM/PANs you've smoked.

Probably not a wise choice for a newb trying to develope a cigar palate.

Other high price legal cigars to try and compare:
A. Fuente Don Carlos, Hemingway, Opus X, Forbidden X, and God of Fire
Litto Gomez Small Batch #1 or #2
Davidoff and Zino
Ashton ESG and VSG
Oliva Master Blend I, II, or III (good luck in finding MB I or II, but very well worth the effort)

Relatively less expensive, worth investigation
Coronado by La Flor Dominicana double corona CA 2006 #2
Padron 5000, Magnum, and Executive
Fuente sun grown and 858
Oliva V, Special S, Serie G and Serie O

There are several places to buy on-line, bestcigarprices.com and Jack Schwartz are the one I normally use, but for singles, a locak cigar shop is your best bet.  Others here uses cigar.com, cigar international, and cigar bid, which are the same company.

I like both punch and cut, Xikar makes some of the best punch and cutters, although I currently uses a Atoll punch and Palio double guillotine cutter.

Digital is nice, so is an analog gage, but I find the best way is to use either crystal pucks or the humidity packs, they work great.  When it felt dry, dump the pack and put in an new pack.

Get a good torch, I like my Zippo Blue.

Figure out a way to deal with your cigar butts, which do not leave bad smell in your house.  I have a fire pot (bought in Lowes), and once a week, I start a fire (I smoke in my back yard) and dump a week's worth of cigar butt and ash into the fire.  The ash makes good fertilizer for trees.

Get a Palio cutter.  I got one last Christmas and I have never had a bad cut with it.  Really great quality, especially considering the price.  I keep some cheap punches around because some of my buddies like it for some reason...it's OK, IMO.

I only have two real humidors.  One had an analog hygro.  It is pretty accurate.  I use a good digital in my main humi with my Ashtons.

Get a good butane lighter.  I like a couple of Xikars and the new Zippo Blu.  NEVER BUY A COLIBRI LIGHTER!!!!!!!

It's still fairly early, but a good and CHEAPER cigar that reminds me of the Padron Annis is the RyJ Habana Reserve.  It may be slightly less bodied.

Generally speaking, anything from Romeo Y Julieta is good to very good.

I am a huge fan of anything Ashton.  I even have a few of their new San Cristobal resting in the humi for the last month.  About time to try one.

When you find Cigarbid.com and start having boxes arrive weekly, invest in some good Rubbermaid tubs.  They will keep cigars pretty well, with even a cheap floral-foam type humidifier, until you can invest in a large, quality humidor.

I mainly buy from Cigarbid, Cigars Intl, Famous Smokes, and Holts.  Just bought from Best Cigar Prices.com and Atlantic Cigars.com for the first time.....no problems with either.  STAY AWAY FROM THOMPSONS!

ETA:  IM me with your mailing address.  I have something I do for newbies.

Straight from the tobacconist's mouth all you need to smoke is what you like. I know a lot of people will say your stupid, but every person cigar tastes are different so always smoke what you like. So far you are smoking good or great quality stuff but stick to what you know but keep trying new stuff too. A lot of new cigar smokers get turned off by smoking some bad stuff out there, and there is a lot of bad stuff out there. I would mostly buy what you are comfortable with every time you go to shop but by a couple of news one as well to try.

If you are one of those lucky people who can't taste the oil used in Bic's and regular Zippo's their fine to use as a lighter. Normally 1 out of 2 people can taste the fuel used in Zippo's so if you can don't use them. Butane or matches are the best option.  Butane lighters are great if they ever work right. Which for the most part they don't. Buy a simple butane lighter the awesome super cool jet torches eat fuel, are finicky, and break easily. A simple cigarette style flame is all you need and even in a Colibri it will last you a long time. If you can find a flint Colibri buy one their great lighters. I find flint butane lighters are the best. I have 2 Dunhill's and one is over 40 years old and works great.

You need a good cigar cutter, I recommend for newbies a straight cutter. Most V cutters on the market are the crappy ones that tear up the cigar cap. Punch cutters are great if you know how to use them, if not you'll bust the wrapper off the cigar.  A good Xicar straight cutter is all you need and is warrantied for the rest of your life.  Michael Jordan cut off the tip of pinky finger with one, so you know their plenty of sharp enough.

Have her read this.

Dear Miss flash-ninja,

Just a note to say yes those cigars were really free to your boyfriend.  Don't feel bad, my wife felt the same when I started this passion and a buddy sent such a box to my house.

mcgrubbs

Seriously, enjoy them!

Haha thanks will have her read that.  Enjoying the La Vieja Habana right now with some 15 yr old Glenlivet in celebration of the Cowboys win.  Very slow earthy smoke and quite enjoyable.
