When the power is pulled and it goes to battery the screen dims (normal) when I plug it back in won't brighten back up.  I have to restart it to bring it back to normal.  Is there a setting that I need to change?

What machine? What OS?  In windows, hit the control panel, power options, and adjust accordingly.  Otherwise, you should have an "FN" button on your keyboard near the left Windows Key, pushing it with F6, or up arrow should increase it, but it varies by laptop.  When in doubt, read the manual.

Compaq, Windows 7, I have been all over(I think) the power options and find nothing for it.

You should be able to hold the FN key and hit the up arrow.  That will increase the gamma (light).  Hit the down arrow to decrease.

Doesn't change, the arrows act as normal.

The problem is the compaq software that starts up when you boot up your computer. You need to either disable the power software via the compaq software or stop the program from running.

I don't own any compaqs so I can help you with that, but if you want to stop it from starting up, do this.

Start––>Run––->Type 'msconfig'––-> [Startup] ––-> (Disable All) ––-> Apply ––––> Restart computer now.

What that does is it clears the list of programs that start up when your computer boots. This is a good thing to do anyways, and the changes aren't permanent (You can always re-check the boxes)

If this won't work.  You need to remove the Compaq crap/bloatware by doing a clean install of Windows 7.

If I was saddled with a Compaq, a fresh install of Windows 7 and/or Mint 7 would be the first order of business.

Try this:

MSCONFIG>Services>check the box "Hide All Microsoft Services"

See what services are left over.  There might be something running that is causing your problems.

I almost forgot.  Windows 7 has settings to micro-manage power settings

Control Panel>Power Options>click on any of the "change plan settings"> click on "change advanced power settings"

Scroll to your power setting, find "display".  Expand "display".  All of the various settings are there.

Report back and let us know if this helps

no.

All I find there is "Turn off display after"

I am running on a dim screen right now after trying the FN arrows.  Does nothing.

That's odd.  Really odd.  I'm running W7RC on two boxes here.  No display issues.

I'm officially at a loss.

This is where I would:

System Restore to a time where the problem didn't exist if possible

or

DL another copy of W7RC off the web and reinstall.

OK before I go any further to make sure you guys understand.  I have no display problems unless I go to battery power then back to shore power.  On battery after a few minutes the display dims as what I believe to be normal.  The problem is upon plugging it back it unless I reboot it will not go back to full light.

If we are on the same page, I need a little step by step on what to look for in the drivers.

go to compaqs page go to teh driver section.. then enter your serieal No. should come back with a list of drivers. grab the one for the hotkeys.. Are you using the RC? of Win7? if so you should be able to use teh vista driver in a pinch..

mine does that occasionally with my Thinkpad and Windows 7.

To fix it all I do is unplug the power cord and re-plug it in. Easy for me, but doesnt help you much.

You could go into the power options and have it not dim when on battery, that would "fix" it.

It doesn't work because you did a clean install of win 7 and don't have the compaq drivers.

Go here:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?product=3979087&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&cc=us

If you installed the 64-bit version of windows 7 then choose vista 64-bit, otherwise choose vista.

(some of these may not want to work in win 7, you may need to do various combinations of run as administrator and run in vista compatibility mode to get them to install correctly, win 7 has better built in drivers than vista so you won't need all of them, if something is working properly now don't screw with it)

Try this...

go to control panel, open nvidia control panel.

go down to mobile, and configure smartdimmer.

try moving your settings with this and apply. It "should" work.

ETA...I am running xp professional on a new compaq so it may show up differently.

Okay, go to the control panel and look for an icon like this. (circled in red)

open it and look for the option in the black box that i highlighted. open that. then on the active tab on the right, make sure the "always use these backlight settings" button is on and move the sliders to the right (highlighted with the red circle). then hit apply at the bottom of that window.

then click on the other tab which says "idle" that i highlighted with the red circle. turn on the "do not use the smartdimmer when my notebook is unplugged". Then hit apply at the bottom.

If the NVidia program doesn't work, you can change some display options this way

Control Panel>Power Options

Click on "Change Plan Settings".  Doesn't matter which one.  You'll end up at the same screen.

Click on "Change Advanced Power Settings"

This is where you want to end up.  You can change many individual settings for each power setting.

Hope this helps.
