Apparently, the teacher brought a rapier and a katana to class, moved all the desks out of the way and allowed students to duel with them. Without protective gear, of course. Unfortunately, a student had her arm slashed to the bone in the second duel in a completely unforeseeable event. So, not enough data for a good rapier vs. katana test. There's video of duel #1 at the link (shot by the loser of duel #2 no less).

SHE (the teacher) should get the Coolest Teacher in The United States of the year award.

That's pretty intense using actual swords.
We had a military history class that we could make cardboard armor and weapons and then split those who wanted to participate into 2 groups and we would get to see how a phalanx worked plus smack other kids with cardboard swords and spears. A couple layers of corrugated cardboard reinforced with duct tape would create a satisfying thunk if swung right. |

Him explaining that scar in the future will get some skepticism in his future, "Oh this? Picked it up in a duel. Yeah, sword. No, seriously, not kidding..."

I actually read the whole article. The 16 year old girl had her wrist cut to the Bone and is now permanently disabled from it.
From article: 'As NS began to feel nauseous and weak from blood loss, another student ran to the VVHS health office for medical assistance,' court documents report. It was 20 minutes before the girl was allowed to call her family, and another 10 before a school health assistant finally called 911 and she was taken by EMS to an emergency room. 'It is shocking that this little girl is bleeding in a classroom and paramedics are not called for 30 minutes,' Hernandez said. 'So those are also procedures that Albuquerque Public Schools needs to address to make sure that first, this doesn't happen. 'But if a student is injured, what are you going to do about it immediately to make sure they get the care that they need.' |

At least they were not in more advanced chemistry class studying powder bun rates and impact sensitive compounds else the teacher would have had them doing the duels with old school dueling pistols.

My teachers were never that cool. Although we did get to do a civil war reenactment outside with flour wrapped in tissue.
About 50 vs 50 throwing these at each other in straight lines. |

'In response to the report's question, 'Did the injury violate school rules?' Mr. Alzaga checked a box indicating 'No',' the lawsuit claims."
Who knew GD ran a New Mexico school district? That's an ingenious way to improve the student-teacher ratio though. |

showed up for chemistry, turns out it was applied physics.
hey, in NM, I'm just glad news headline starting with "NM chemistry teacher" didn't end up with drugs. They say kids don't learn anything in NM public schools, I bet everyone in that class learned that big fucking knifes make big fucking cuts. |

Parents are going to sue the crap out of the school district.
Girl will be fine after surgery. Stupid teacher will probably be fired. |

A little off topic but my 10th grade home room was in the Home Economics class room. I always wanted to screw the woman who taught that class.

Had a history teacher that was into living history. During the week teaching about the US civil war, he would dress as a Zouave and bring his complete soldier’s kit to school. Take the class to the school’s rifle range and allow them to load and fire a muzzleloading rifle. Those standing around were grinding their teeth on hardtack. No one harmed, and was sanctioned and approved by the school district. This was around 1979.

As a product of the Albuquerque school system, I can rightly say, at least she didn’t end up pregnant from her teacher. Or have to have paternity tests 5 guys in the school before she received her child support payments, while on WIC & Medicaid.
That’s a win in my book! |

For some reason I thought this was going to be a homosexual thing.

Jebus that's a stupid teacher. At lease use a Boken not a live blade.

While giving students swords has a certain bad ass/cool factor to it, it was a VERY bad idea.
Swords, even low quality ones with bad edges, are still very dangerous and can cause injury/death. As a poster mentioned, a bokken/wooden replica(maybe two Shinai?) would have been a better choice. Or, maybe, not bringing them at all? |

Quoted: The school tried to claim it was a welding accident. View Quote There's a lot I don't remember from chemistry but I am absolutely certain we never did any welding in chemistry class in high school or college. Do you have to be a special kind of stupid to be a public school teacher or administrator? |
